There are fourteen entered for Saturday's Betfred Classic Chase at Warwick, although the presence of top weight Hey Big Spender has left plenty out of the handicap. Brian Ellison's Neptune Equester will hope to take full advantage as the 11/2 favourite with race sponsor Betfred, although David Pipe boasts a strong pair for the Grade Three handicap.
Neptune Equester is nicely weighted at 10st 6lbs and the 9-year-old can underline his Grand National potential with another big run this weekend. He showed masses of stamina when winning an attritional three and a half mile handicap at Haydock in November, although he struggled over 25 furlongs at Wetherby last time out, with Saturday's step back up to 3 miles 5 furlongs likely to be very welcome.
However, stable jockey Danny Cook won't take the ride as he is out injured and David Pipe will hope that one of his leading pair can take full advantage. Sona Sasta (10st 2lbs) is available at industry best priced odds of 13/2 and, despite being relatively unexposed over fences, the 9-year-old is a dual winner and was runner up to Le Beau Bai on his reappearance at Chepstow. The gelding struggled in a big field handicap Leopardstown last time but the ground dried out there and a bit more give at Warwick would be very welcome.
Stablemate Faasel (10st 7lbs) makes his first start of the season and the veteran does tend to go well fresh. The 11-year-old was last seen finishing second in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham and chased home Poker De Sivola in the Bet365 Gold Cup in April, with the odds of 10/1 this weekend looking very tempting with Betfred.com.
Meanwhile, the progressive Strongbows Legend is well fancied at 13/2 after dominating at Hereford before falling at Plumpton last time, although Charles Longsdon's gelding is 5lbs out of the handicap.
Major Malarkey is just a touch further back in the latest odds at 8/1 and Nigel Twiston-Davies's 9-year-old was a dual winner last time, although he has plenty to prove after an error strewn fifth at Sandown.
Blazing Bailey was also a dual winner last season and the 10-year-old is the sole representative of Alan King, who has won the last two renewals of this race with D'Argent and West End Rocker. Bailey has struggled on his two appearances this season but is back to his winning mark on Saturday and must be respected from odds of 9/1.
Blazing Bailey receives 10lbs from top weight Hey Big Spender (11st 12lbs), who concedes 10lbs-plus to all of the field. The Rehearsal Chase winner has plenty on his plate after falling in the Welsh National last time, although he has always been an impressive chaser and is 10/1 with Betfred.
Elsewhere, Fortification goes off a feather weight after disappointing at Kempton last time out and can be backed at 10/1, while the unexposed Morning Moment is priced 12/1, despite being 8lbs out of the weights and being caught close to home by Neptune Equester at Haydock in November.
It looks a tough handicap chase to call but we fancy the returning Faasel to provide some value and catch the rest on the hop in the Midlands.
