Robert Hennessy's Rubi Light won the weekend's feature race in Ireland and was immediately priced up for Ryanair Chase glory at Cheltenham Festival in March. The 6-year-old enhanced his reputation further when winning the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown and is 8/1 in the Ryanair betting with Paddy Power.
Rubi Light is thought of as one of the most exciting chasing prospects currently plying their trade on the 'Emerald Isle' and he confirmed that more accolades could be on their way at the weekend. Andrew Lynch opened up a commanding lead aboard the eventual winner as he secured a resounding five length victory from fellow 5/2 joint favourite Joncol.
Hennessy's exciting prospect was quickly priced 8/1 for the Ryanair Chase and is an industry best priced 25/1 for the Gold Cup with PaddyPower.com. Hennessy had indicated that his 6-year-old will next be seen at the Lexus Chase and a decision on whether he goes for the Gold Cup or Ryanair come March will be decided after that.
Paul Nolan's Joncol recovered well from a mistake to finish second in the John Durkan, although he is a long 33/1 shot for the Ryanair Chase and he joins Rubi Light at 25/1 for Gold Cup glory.
There were a couple of interesting races over at Cork at the weekend as well and they had an immediate effect on the Cheltenham betting. Willie Mullins' Golden Silver had been expected to pick up an easy win in the Hilly Way Chase but the 2/7 ante-post favourite was a hugely fortuitous winner in the end. The 9-year-old was trailing long time leader Osirixamix by five lengths and seemingly struggling to make any impression, only for the front-runner to fall at the last and hand Golden Silver victory on a plate. Paddy Power go 33/1 for Golden Silver to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase, although he has plenty to prove between now and then.
Also at Cork, Corbally Ghost picked up his first victory in graded company as he took the Grade Three Cork Skeyes Novice Hurdle. Noel Meade's 4-year-old jumped well in beating Best Served Cold and racked up a third win on the trot. Paddy Power offer him 33/1 for the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival.
Meanwhile, Blackstairmountain was victorious on his first start over fences at Clonmel on Wednesday. Willie Mullins 6-year-old is already a grade one novice hurdles winner and he made the transition to fences look easy when securing a comfortably three length victory. He is now a 20/1 chance for the Arkle Trophy with PaddyPower.
