2010 Paddy Power Gold Cup Odds: Long Run all the rage for Saturday's big race

The Nicky Henderson trained five year old Long Run heads the betting for Saturday's big race, the Paddy Power Gold Cup at odds of 10/3 with the sponsors. Beaten just the once on British shores, Long Run has been aimed at this race since finishing third in last season's RSA Chase as a novice and despite having a lumpy eleven stone six pounds to carry around, there's been a constant flow of punters money for the horse all week. There are question marks however over whether the handicap or the jockey may be his undoing. He carries 11-6 but amateur jockey and owner Sam Waley-Cohen claims five in the saddle. Cohen has recieved criticism in the past and will be a negative in the mind of some punters.

Second in the betting is the Byrne Group Plate winner from last season's Cheltenham Festival, Great Endeavour. Trained by David Pipe, the six year old is getting just under stone off the favourite and can be backed at odds of 9/2 with Paddy Power. He seems well in at the handicap and his win at Cheltenham in March showed that another improvement here and he could be difficult to beat at the weights. The horse he beat into second in the Byrne Group Plate was Sunnyhillboy, who was fast finishing up the Cheltenham hill losing out by one and a quarter lengths on the day. Jonjo O'Neill's seven year old is a 8/1 shot with the sponsors.

Stablemate to the favourite Long Run is Mad Max, a huge horse who was impressive in beating Somersby on his last appearance on a racecourse at the Aintree Grand National meeting last April. Henderson's eight year old was fourth in the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival and stable jockey Barry Geraghty takes the ride. Reports are that he has been backed in the week and he's an 8/1 chance on the eve of the race with Paddy Power.

It's a really competitive betting race the Paddy Power Gold Cup and there aren't many you can discount at the odds. Irish raider Catch Me is another 8/1 chance as trainer Edward O'Grady looks to win the race for a second year in succession having trained Tranquil Sea to victory twelve months ago. A top class hurdler, the eight year old has had injury problems and wasn't hugely impressive on his only appearance this season to date at Naas last month.

Further down the betting at 14/1 is last year's runner-up Poquelin. A course and distance winner, the Paul Nicholls trained seven year old ran a huge race twelve months ago in ground he hated to finish four and a half lengths behind Tranquil Sea. He went on to win the Boylesports Gold Cup and was beaten favourite in the Ryanair Chase at the festival. He looked to have a good breather in his reappearance this season going down narrowly to Monet's Garden at Aintree in the Old Roan Chase and carries top weight here.

Noel Fehily has stepped into the shoes of Ruby Walsh following the broken leg he sustained last week in Down Royal has sidelined Paul Nicholls number one jockey. Fehily rides Tchico Polos, the recent haldon Cup winner who is a 16/1 chance with Paddy Power for Saturday's Race.

Pigeon Island is an interesting runner who has just sneaked in at the weights and looks well handicapped if 100%. The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained seven year old is no stranger to the racecourse, having been run 40 times since his debut over the obstacles in 2006. The highlight to date was his win in last season's Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival and the trainer has won this race before with Imperial Commander. At odds of 20/1 he represents a decent each-way chance at the weights.
