Magical tipped to land Fillies Mile glory at Newmarket
Friday 13th October, 2017 - 3:35pm Newmarket - Fillies' Mile
Aidan O'Brien has won the last three renewals of the Fillies' Mile and the master of Ballydoyle will unleash a three-pronged attack at the Newmarket Group 1 on Friday afternoon, and the Irish-trained triumvirate currently hold the top three places in the betting in a race that can often produce a future Classic winner.
- Aidan O'Brien has trained the last three Fillies' Mile winners
- Godolphin won this race three times between 2010 and 2012
- Happily won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere last time out

O'Brien Trio Dominate Betting
Ryan Moore has elected to ride Happily in the Fillies' Mile, so it was no surprise to see the exciting filly trimmed in the betting for this showpiece event at Flat HQ, and the recent Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner is as short as 6/4 with bet365 to win this race, and could be the primary challenger from the O'Brien yard.
Even though she won cosily on Arc day she took a few moments to get fully into stride, and with an abundance of exciting youngsters taking their chance here then she could potentially prove vulnerable to some of her rivals, if she takes as much time to warm up here, so while she will be doing all her best work late on, she may just struggle to get her nose in front.
Magical comfortably beat Happily when the pair met in the Debutante Stakes earlier in the season, but the latter then turned the form around in the Moyglare Stud Stakes next time out, but there was only a short-head between them, so at 7/2 with Ladbrokes then Magical could well be the value play of the pair.
Having struggled in France last time out, Magical will need to get back to her best, but she has shown she is a top notch filly, and while getting the better of Happily she can also down stablemate September, who was touted as O'Brien's number one filly earlier in the season, but she has finished behind both Happily and Magical, so at 7/1 with Coral is one to avoid.
Major Challengers To Ballydoyle String
Godolphin won this race three years on the spin between 2010 and 2012, and the boys in blue have an interesting runner in the shape of Magic Lily, who bolted up for Charlie Appleby in a maiden over course and distance last month, and the 8/1 chance with Betfred has the potential to be a superstar.
However, she could be a star act for next season, as this is a tough task on only her second career start, and she may just have to settle for a minor role, alongside Karl Burke's Laurens, who narrowly won the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster, and at 10/1 with bet365 is an eye-catching runner, but she may lack the scope of some of her more heralded rivals on Friday.
Best Of The Rest
Ellthea will be another challenger for the aforementioned Burke, and will head to Newmarket on the back of two wins, but the 20/1 chance with Paddy Power will need a lot more if she is to build on a Group 3 win at Naas, and may just struggle against some of the most exciting two-year-old fillies in training.
Of the others, Efaadh will be a French challenger making the journey over, but the 25/1 outsider will need to improve on her recent form, while Nyaleti (25/1) and Muirin (33/1) are another couple of runners that may just find tough against a red-hot charge from the O'Brien stable.
