King George Vl and Queen Elizabeth ll Stakes Antepost Betting Preview

With only 18 runners left and still 12 days away from the final declarations the Group One, King George Vl and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot is looking every bit like the best race of season. Antepost favourite with even money odds offered by Paddy Power is the Epsom Derby winner, Workforce, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, while next best in the betting at 5/2 is Harbinger, also trained Stoute.

Of course the race has always been regarded as one of the most prestigious ran in the UK for which it provides a platform where the top three year old colts can be tested against their elders as well as by the top 3, 4 and 5 year old fillies.

In fact the top filly in the race looks like it will be John Gosden’s Dar Re Mi, winner of the Sheema Classic in Dubai earlier this season and who needed the run when fourth behind Twice Over in the Group One Eclipse Stakes at the beginning of the month. Possibly, the one to watch of the older generation is three time Arc de Triomphe Runner Up, Youmzain, who comes to the race in fine form following an excellent second place behind the highly rated, Andre Fabre trained, Plumania in the Group One, Saint Cloud Grand Prix at the end of June. It is hard to believe that this seven year old has nor won a race for two years, but he remains a top class race horse and will have very chance to change that trend in this.

Needless to say, Aidan O’Brien will be bringing a strong contingent over from his Ballydoyle yard in Ireland, possibly creating a Stoute v O’Brien battle of the 'Derby Winners'! At this stage it looks likely that one of those will be Irish Derby winner, Cape Blanco, which if confirmed could change the odds of this race significantly, particularly as he has already beaten Workforce this season in the Group One Dante Stakes at York. As it stands currently, Cape Blanco is a 5/1 chance with Paddy Power while the next best of the ‘Brien contingent is Epsom Derby 4th Jan Vermeer.
