Time To Find The Needle In the Haystack
Few races this season will be as difficult for punters as the Victoria Cup with a whole host of horses in with a chance according to the betting.
At the time of writing, it is 8/1 the field with Fastnet Tempest the narrow jolly with Sky Bet. The William Haggas trained 4YO has never been out of the top five during his career, and looked in good form last time out on seasonal debut when 3rd at Newbury. He has just a pound more on his back for this assignment, and that looks more than workable.
Remarkable (10/1) ran a massive race when 2nd in the big handicap race on Champions Day last back end which puts him right in the frame. The John Gosden trained runner has a couple of pounds more to deal with but with Kieran Shoemark taking three off, the 4YO is another one who should be right there.
Kadrizzi (14/1) was narrowly beaten on his last start at Chelmsford, and aims to go one better off of the same mark, albeit in much deeper company for Dean Ivory. Above The Rest (14/1) is another one who produced an encouraging display last time out when he finished 4th at Ripon down at 6f, and he should be better with fitness on his side and an extra furlong to work with.
George William is a son of the excellent Paco Boy, and he was narrowly beaten by Fastnet Rock in that Newbury race on his last start. He has been given just a pound hike for that encouraging performance and that ensures he is likely to be competitive for punters at 16/1 with Paddy Power.
Ride Like The Wind (16/1) has been down the field on his last two starts but Lewis Edmunds is taking 5lbs off which is interesting, whilst Donncha (16/1) is a hugely consistent animal who has shown plenty of form down at 7f before, and must be respected as a result.
The conclusion is that the Victoria Cup is a damn difficult race to find the winner!
Joking aside, it is Above The Rest who stands out from an each-way point of view for David Barron. He ran with great credit last time out on seasonal debut but the key with him is that he will be better back up at 7f which is his favoured distance. It is mighty difficult to be confident about any horse in this one, but Above The Rest has all the credentials to be at least placed.
