The Imperial Cup has traditionaly become known as the race which falls the weekend before the start of Cheltenham Festival. Whilst the big name representatives from the leading stables areready to descend on Cheltenham, many stables send runners for this competitive Sandown handica. It is also popular with punters who are looking to increase their Festival War chests and as such, tips for the race are always welcome.
The Phillip Hobbs trained, Qaspal, has come in for considerable support ahead of the Paddy Power Imperial Cup following a tip amongst antepost punters midweek and is now down to 4/1 with most Bookmakers, including race sponsors Paddy Power.
It is well known that the trainer is very fond of this six year old who won in fine style at Kempton Park on good to soft ground over 2 miles last month and then followed that up a week later with an even better looking win over 2m 4f in heavy ground at Sandown. The Imperial Cup is over the shorter 2 mile trip and will be on much firmer ground which should not trouble him and he comes into the race when the Hobbs stable is firing.
Hobbs also needs the horse to win this in order for him to qualify for the Martin Pipe Conditioners Hurdle at Cheltenham, which should he win, he will pick a £75,000 bonus, put up by the sponsors for any horse who wins this and goes on to win a race at the Cheltenham Festival next week. These are all pointers that justify his favouritism where he is clearly the horse to beat in the race.

The one we are tipping up for the race and think can beat him however is the Paul Nicholls trained Pepe Simo who will be coming into the race on an excellent mark and who will improve from his run in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day. That race was won by current Champion Hurdle favourite, Go Native and while our tip was out of his depth, he was not disgraced; before that he had won three goods novice hurdle events in fine style each time
Now in handicap company for the first time, Pepe Simo can take advantage of his generous mark of 140 and take the spoils in this. Should he win, punters are advised to check out the odds for County Hurdle next week at the Festival, where Pepe Simo holds an entry.
