Odds On Master Minded Must Win Game Spirit Chase

With trainer Paul Nicholls seemingly convinced that Master Minded is well over his rib injury and is back firing on all cylinders at home it is little wonder that punters have backed him off the boards to win this Grade 2, Game Spirit Chase over 2 miles 1 furlong, at Newbury.

Having scared most trainers off the race, it is good to see that Alan King is likely to persevere with his 2007 Champion Chase winner, Voy Por Ustedes. This great rival of Master Minded has not been at his best so far this season, finishing only third and sixth respectively in the Amlin Chase in November and the Lexus Chase in December. King will use this race as a warm up for a second tilt at the Ryanair Chase at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival in which he finished second to Imperial Commander. Master Minded is as short as ½ odds on to win this race while Voy Por Ustedes can be backed at 10/3 with Paddy Power.

The Gary Moore trained Fix The Rib has had an interesting warm up for this race, by running on the AW flat at Kempton at the end of last month when he ran very impressively over 1m3f to finish 2nd behind Cairnsmore. Going from the flat to fences is obviously unusual, but if nothing else he has showed that he has great speed and he could run well with a clear round. Fix The Rib is around the 8/1 mark with Paddy Power.

We cannot see beyond Master Minded and Voy Por Ustedes for this and would be very surprised if there was any other finishing order. Mahogany Blaze has a little bit of class about him but looking at his run against Twist Magic in the Tingle Creek Chase in December, where he finished 55 lengths adrift, he would have an awful lot of improving to do to be close in this.
