The eagerly anticipated rearranged King George VI Chase is finally due to take place on Saturday at Kempton and the dominant Kauto Star is odds on favourite. Paddy Power offer the four time winner at industry best priced odds of 8/11 to record a sensational fifth consecutive win, although with soft ground expected his stablemate The Nightingale has been well backed in recent days.
Tony McCoy is expected to ride Kauto Star for the first time with Noel Fehily out injured, and Ruby Walsh also expected to miss out with injury after riding the 11-year-old to his four consecutive King George VI wins. The two time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner won last year by an astonishing 36 lengths from Madison du Berlais, who is at 33/1 with Paddy Power this year and is better left alone after falling twice in his last three starts. In Kauto Star's last outing he defeated Sizing Europe by 41 lengths in the JNwine Champion Chase, and a rematch has been ruled out as Sizing Europe has been pulled out despite being as short as 14/1 for this race. Paul Nicholls' Kauto Star is looking nigh on unbeatable although historically sounds a note of caution as there has only been one winner of the King George aged over nine years since 1990.
Kauto Star's stablemate The Nightingale has been well backed during the past week and has been clipped into industry best priced odds of 10/1 from 14/1 with PaddyPower.com, and is well worth a look as the rain-affected soft ground is expected to suit the eight-year-old.
Meanwhile, the French import Long Run is second favourite with Paddy Power offering odds of 11/2 and the 6-year-old looks to have great potential having jumped well of late. He has a fantastic career record so far, with five wins, one second place and two thirds in eight chase starts. He also has form at Kempton as he won the Feltham Novices Chase in 2009, but the ground might just favour The Nightingale to provide the biggest threat to Kauto Star's record.
Elsewhere, Forpadydeplasterer is attempting to end a run of seven consecutive second place finishes and is offered at 12/1 by PaddyPower. Tom George's Nacarat is at odds of 10/1 and is fancied to put up a better challenge this year after attempting to live with Kauto Star last year before falling away to fourth - 41 lengths back. Since then he came a hugely creditable fourth in the Betfair Chase with Imperial Commander emerging victorious.
The original King George race in December was postponed due to snow means and nine entries remain from the December declarations. Although Nigel Twiston-Davies has been voicing his displeasure that he wasn't allowed to add Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander to the original declarations. It would have been a fascinating battle between the Gold Cup winner and the legendary Kauto Star, but Kauto Star remains the one to beat as he attempts to add another King George win to his already stellar record.
