Dante Stakes Betting: Seville edges favouritism for Derby trial at York

Thursday's Dante Stakes looks set to live up to its reputation as 'the' trial for the Derby as three of the leading Epsom fancies head the betting at York. There is barely anything to choose between Seville, World Domination and Carlton House for the feature race of the Dante Meeting, with Bet 365 making Seville a marginal 15/8 favourite.

The winner of Thursday's 1 mile, 2 furlong and 88 yard Group Two on the Knavesmire could well determine who starts as favourite for the prestigious Derby, and it is well worth remembering that several Dante winners have gone on to claim Epsom glory - including Authorized as recently as 2007.

Aidan O'Brien's Seville could well justify that marginal favouritism and still looks great value at an industry best price of 7/1 for the Derby with B365. The promising Irish colt was runner up to Dubai Prince at Gowran before going on to win over seven and a half furlongs at Tipperary. The most impressive performance to date from the 3-year-old though was a second place to Casamento in the Racing Post Trophy, where the colt comfortably held off Master Of Hounds.

Seville should improve for the step up in trip this week and in form trainer O'Brien boasts a formidable record in the Dante, winning the last two renewals with Black Bear and Cape Blanco, and recently claimed four wins from four runners at the Chester May Meeting.

The biggest threat to O'Brien could come from the legendary Henry Cecil's stables as he enters current 7/2 favourite for the Derby, World Domination. The 3-year-old is an industry best of 2/1 in the betting with Bet 365 for the Dante Stakes after winning on debut in impressive time at Newbury in April. The colt could have an edge in fitness as the only leading contender to have appeared this season. However, he faces a big step up in class against Seville and Carlton House, and the last ten Dante winners had more than one start to their name.

Sir Michael Stoute's Carlton House joins World Domination at 2/1 in the betting and is only marginally less fancied for the Derby at 9/2. The Queen's colt was an impressive winner of a Newbury maiden in October, and the last ten Dante winners had won a race prior to York. The colt represents a rare Derby contender for the Queen and is expected to continue to improve.

Away from the three leading fancies, Marcus Tregoning's Yaseer is the next best in the betting at 12/1 with Bet365.com. The 3-year-old chased Carlton House home at Newbury, eventually finishing 9 lengths back, but the lightly raced colt's stand out performance was a hugely impressive second in the Craven Stakes over a mile at Newmarket. Currently a 40/1 shot for the Derby, Tregoning's entry has some way to go to match the main three but is well worth keeping an eye on.

Meanwhile, Hughie Morrison enters 33/1 punt Pisco Sour but has admitted he has no great expectations, with Michael Dods' Ashva completing the field at 66/1 in partnership with last year's winning jockey Jonny Murtagh.

The build up to the race is all about the leading three in the betting and it looks set to be a classic, and Seville could justify that marginal favouritism and in the process become the leading contender for Epsom.
