This weekend is often seen as the calm before the storm that is the Cheltenham Festival but the Imperial Cup should not be missed on Saturday at Sandown Park. Its a very competitive race and has gained significance in recent years with the sponsors Paddy Power offering a cash bonus of £75,000 to any horse that can win the Imperial Cup, before then going to the Cheltenham Festival and winning again. That has given the race a nice edge with most of the entries for the Imperial Cup also holding entries of some kind at the Cheltenham Festival.

One that is looking well fancied and with a chance this weekend at Sandown is Qaspal who looks to have all the tools needed to do well. His last run was an excellent win at Sandown last month and he has to be in with a good chance if he arrives on form, this is reflected in his current odds of 5/1 with Paddy Power.com to win the Imperial Cup. He is carrying a good looking weight after just sneaking in the race meaning he has to be taken seriously for the win here before going onto Cheltenham with good chances. He has an entry in the County Hurdle at the Festival and should he win the Imperial Cup then he will head to Cheltenham full of confidence and on form. Another with an entry in the County Hurdle and the Imperial Cup is Aather who has also been looking good so far this season. Last time out he came in a good second at Cheltenham at the end of January and can be backed at a good looking 10/1 with Paddy Power to claim the win at Sandown.
One that we should mention is the Paul Nicholls trained Pepe Simo who will be carrying 11-5 at Sandown in his bid for victory, Ruby Walsh is taking the ride so clearly has to be taken seriously in this market. He came in 5th in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day in a classy field so has to have chances here, the bookies agree and Pepe Simo is priced at 13/2 with Paddy Power to claim the win. He is another with an entry for Cheltenham and is likely to also be seen in the County Hurdle if he takes the win at Sandown. We like the look of Qaspal for the Imperial Cup with a good weight on his back and he could go to the County Hurdle with a big bonus on the line.
It is also well worth noting that the race sponsors Paddy Power are going five places for the Imperial Cup, this is a great offer punters in what looks to be a competitive race with some good value across the board.
