Selecting the winner of this race is no easy task, particularly if based on the results of the last two races which were both won by horses trained by Gary Moore, He won in 2007 with 50/1 shot, Heathcote and in 2008 he followed up by saddling Wingman to victory at 14/1.
This year, Moore could have as many as three runners, two of which have been making waves in the antepost market all week. Firstly, Harry Tricker, who is currently disputing favouritism with Spirit River, has been backed down from 12/1 to 13/2 with Victor Chandler. Not seen since last November, when he came a impressive second behind leading Champion Hurdle contender, Khyber Kim in the Grade 3, Greatwood Handicap at Cheltenham, this horse certainly has the ability to win this race for which he is well in at the weights. Stablemate Numide, currently a 20/1 shot is another who has attracted market support but we think he at best is an each way prospect.
Bookmakers have also reported consistent support for the Paul Nicholls trained, Takeroc, who had an original antepost price of 33/1 but who is now down to as short as 10/1. Nicholls tipped this horse’s each way prospects last week in his Racing Post column and it looks like the punters have taken the bait. He will certainly improve from his fifth place in the Stellar Football Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham a fortnight ago but that was a modest race and this will be a much greater test.

Nicky Henderson is another trainer who has a great record in this race and like Moore, he is likely to have three runners in the race, including race favourite, Spirit River. This five year old may possibly be taking on a little too much this early in his career, but the way in which he trotted up last time out to win by 6 lengths in the Caspian Caviar Handicap at Cheltenham in December showed tremendous promise, based on that form he should be there or thereabouts in this. Spirit River is currently 6/1 with Victor Chandler
The one we like the look of is the Alan King trained, Manyriverstocross, who is on a good mark for the race and who won the Grade 2, Winter Novices Hurdle at Sandown in December. He subsequently ran poorly in the Grade One Challow Novices Hurdle, but King is adamant that a line can be drawn through that performance and that the five year old is back to his best in training.
Our selection for the race is Manyriverstocross @12/1 with Victor Chandler.
