This weekend’s December Gold Cup, renamed the Vote AP Gold Cup for this year, will see the Nicky Henderson trained Dave’s Dream go off as a worthy favourite in the 16 runner field. Currently the 7 year old is a best price of 5/1 with Paddy Power to win the race and complete an early season double, after convincingly winning the PaddyPower.com Handicap Chase over two miles on this course on good ground a month ago.
Tony McCoy was truly overwhelmed when receiving the news that the Grade 3 December Gold Cup at Cheltenham was to be renamed this year in honour of the 15 time champion jockey in order to his assist racing’s big effort to get him crowned as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. It will be doubly overwhelming therefore should he win the race, but his mount Finger On The Pulse, trained by Tom Taafe in Ireland, will need to improve considerably on his last effort when he finished a distance behind Little Josh, in the Paddy Power Gold Cup over course and distance in November. Little Josh also runs in this and is currently second favourite to win with odds of 11/2.
Little Josh surprised everybody in the’ Paddy Power’, including his trainer, Nigel Twiston-Davies, who somewhat surprisingly has kept faith with his son, Sam, who rode him that day and will take the ride in this race, while stable jockey, Paddy Brennan, rides 33/1 outsider, Pigeon Island.
There will in fact be several who will take on Little Josh in this race who finished behind him in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, including Mad Max, Poquelin and Great Endeavour who finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, but are all better off this time at the weights. Poquelin, who will carry top weight is one of two entries from the Paul Nicholls yard, the other being the exciting Robinson Collonges, winner of two of his three novice starts this season,. Bookmakers have reported plenty of support for this 7 year old, who is as short as 6/1 to win the race with Paddy power
Also being backed is the David Pipe trained, Great Endeavour, who loves this course and is a dual winner at the Cheltenham Festival. He will improve from his last run and looks a more than reasonable each way bet with odds currently of 10/1. Into 9/1 is the Tony Martin entry, Psycho, a winner last time out of a good quality Chase race at Naas, where he had the very useful Osana over 4 lengths behind in second place. Martin’s horses are always regarded as a danger in competitive handicaps like this and should be respected, as should his second entry, Northern Alliance who has a decent each way chance with odds of 20/1 from paddy power
For our money however, we are going to side with the favourite, Dave’s Dream, who comes into the race on a good mark and in great form. His win last time in the Paddy Power.com Handicap Chase was mighty impressive and he will enjoy the extra half mile in this.
