Only eight go to post for the Irish Field St Leger at the Curragh on Saturday with the Dermot Weld trained, Profound Beauty heading the betting market with best price odds of 2/1 available via Paddy Power Online Bookmakers. The mare has been in great form all season, winning three of her four starts, including last time out in the Group 3, Ballyroan Stakes, just over a month ago, where she made all over the 1½ mile trip at Leopardstown to win easily. That run and her subsequent work at home has put her spot on to win this Group One, which will be her last run before she heads ‘Down Under’ once again for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup.
Opposing the favourite will be the Jeremy Noseda trained, Sans Frontieres, who is rapidly earning himself a big reputation as a potential champion stayer of the future. He was an easy winner last time out of the 1 mile 5 furlong Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, where he had 2009 Doncaster St Leger, runner up, Kite Wood, well behind. Before that he won the Group Two, Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket ahead of Redwood and also well beaten, behind him that day was Group One winner, Spanish Moon. These are quality performances, which make the contest with Profound Beauty all the more exciting. He can be backed to win the Irish Field St Leger at a best price of 11/4 available from Paddy Power.
Kite Wood who has odds of 6/1 with PaddyPower in fact opposes again here but with the best will in the world it is difficult to see how he can turn things around so quickly and get in front of Sans Frontieres in this. There is no doubt that Kite Wood is a class act, as his performance in the Doncaster St Leger showed last year, but his form since winning the Group Two, Prix Vicomtesse Vigier, over 2 miles at Longchamp in May has deteriorated and is one to perhaps leave alone this time.

There has been some support for the claims of the John Dunlop entry, Tactic, who finished ahead of a below par, Profound Beauty over course and distance in the Group Three, Curragh Cup back in June, where he stayed on in great style to win with a little to spare. Since then he finished lame in the Goodwood Cup in late July and will need to be back at his best to win here, but on all known form he has a chance and at 8/1 he is reasonable value. Also 8/1 is the Aidan O’Brien entry, Flying Cross. A lightly raced three year old who has won his only start as a three year old when he took the Super Sunday on October 3rd race over a 1½ miles at Tipperary at the end of August. He is well thought of at Ballydoyle but it would be a big surprise if he went from his last run to win a Group One particularly with an additional two furlongs in the space of a few weeks.
