After finishing third in the Epsom Derby and winning the Group 2, Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, the Mahmood Al Zarooni trained, Rewilding fully deserves his place at the head of the betting for the Doncaster St Leger on Saturday with current odds of 11/8 available from Paddy Power Online Bookmakers.
Should he get home in first place Rewilding will be the sixth Godolphin winner of the race he will also be the sixth favourite since the turn of the century to have won the race, a statistic that no doubt will please ‘favourite backers’. There appears to be few worries about his well being and even the ground which looks sure to have some cut it in will suit him, it is only the extra two furlongs that may cause any anxiety, but on his Great Voltigeur run he looks to be a natural stayer. All in all he is very difficult to oppose and he should be winning the race.
2010 Doncaster St Leger Stakes Odds Comparison.
Aidan O’Brien has not had a winner of the St Leger since Scorpion won in 2005, but he seems quietly confident about the chances of his Ballydoyle pair, Midas Touch and Joshua Tree. They finished second and third respectively behind Rewilding at York and although they would need to improve, their ability to get the extra two furlongs might be greater than that of the favourite; if so then a surprise could be ‘on the cards’. Certainly in the case of Joshua Tree, who was only having his first run of the year, the case maybe stronger, as he is sure to come on for the run and he looked to be travelling best of all at the York finish. On that run he should not be ignored and with odds of 7/1 he represents good value.

One horse being backed against the favourite is the John Gosden trained, Arctic Cosmos, who was third in the Group 3, Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, a traditional St Leger trial race. The stable are very confident that he is going to get the trip better than Dandino who was one place in front of him in the Gordon Stakes and opposes again here. Arctic Cosmos, who will be in blinkers for the first time, has been backed in from 8/1 to 13/2 with several Bookmakers but is still available at 7/1 from paddypower, who apply the same price to Dandino.
Ed Dunlop remains upbeat about the chances of his dual Oaks winner, Snow Fairy, but is aware that although receiving the 3Ib filly allowance, that no filly has won the race since 1992. She has a big task on here, but she should get the trip comfortably enough and could find herself there or thereabouts at the end; she too is a 7/1 shot to win the race.
