Ruby Walsh heads the betting to win the leading rider award at Cheltenham Festival again

Ruby Walsh heads the betting to win the Tomas Pink Leading Rider Award at this year's Cheltenham Festival as Ladbrokes offer him at odds of 11/10 to retain his crown. Walsh has won the award at five of the last seven festivals, including consecutive wins in the last three, although he is likely to face tough opposition from Barry Geraghty and Tony McCoy who are well backed in the betting this year.

Walsh has been out of action since breaking his leg back in November but he should return to racing by the end of February and he is likely to get the pick of Paul Nicholls' and Willie Mullins' stars come Cheltenham Festival in March. He is the stand out jockey in the history of the festival as he broke records in 2010 by reaching 27 race wins at the Festival, and in doing so he bypassed the record of 25 set by the late Pat Taaffe.

Breaking records is nothing new for Walsh as he produced a stunning performance in 2009 by claiming an unprecedented seven wins, including victories aboard Kauto Star, Master Minded and Que Vega.

It will be interesting to see if his time away from the race track with injury has had any effect and it is Barry Geraghty who is well backed to provide the closest challenge for the Leading Rider Award. Geraghty has 19 festival winners to date and is available at odds of 3/1 with Ladbrokes.com to win the award he claimed back in 2003 with five winners.

Tony McCoy is another that has great pedigree at Cheltenham and the 15-time champion jockey has 23 Festival wins following his Champion Hurdle and Ryanair Chase wins last year. McCoy is priced at odds of 6/1 with Ladbrokes for the award, while Robert Thornton, winner of the 2008 Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle is the best of the rest at 12/1, as a number of top jockeys look to knock Walsh off his Cheltenham perch.
