The Summit Juvenile Hurdle returns on Saturday after a three year absence and there are some exciting 3-year-olds in the field at Doncaster. The Grade Two race is the feature of Doncaster's Christmas meeting and everyone will be hoping it isn't plagued by weather, particularly with Paul Nicholls Ranjaan well fancied at odds of even money with the sponsors Victor Chandler.
The race was moved from Lingfield Park to Doncaster in 2010 but it hasn't been run for the past three years due to snow. This year's renewal looks set to go ahead and many will be looking to emulate some very fine previous winners of the 2 mile and half a furlong contest, with Supreme Novices Hurdle winner Hors La Loi III a former champion.
Paul Nicholls has opted not to enter Hinterland, who takes his chance at the Cheltenham meeting instead, this weekend but does boast a strong contender in Ranjaan. The gelding was a beaten favourite on his British debut over hurdles three weeks ago. Connections will be hoping for firmer ground Saturday, although it is worth noting that he produced several disappointing runs when well backed on the flat in France last term.
A more likely winner could be John Quinn's Royal Bonsai, who is priced 5/1 by VC Bet. The well exposed gelding is yet to finish out of the first two places in three starts over hurdles, including victory in his last two. He often produces his best around the 2 mile mark and his win at Haydock from odds of 10/1 in October suggests that Quinn has an exciting prospect.
Kie has a similarly impressive record from his short career over hurdles as he has won two and finished third in three starts. The son of Old Vic was a 50/1 winner at Kelso in October and recorded a facile victory when 1/6 favourite at Musselburgh last time. The 3-year-old enjoys this trip and his explosive pace should ensure that the 9/2 shot is right in the mix for the in-form Donald McCain Jr.
Jim Best's School For Scandal (9/2) won on his debut over hurdles at Weatherby last month, beating Volcan Surprise over this trip. The son of Pivotal is an ultra consistent sort, placing in eight of ten on the all weather, and he looks to have place claims again this weekend.
Tom Tate's Eagle Rock (9/1) also has the benefit of a previous outing over hurdles after finishing runner up to 4/9 favourite Countrywide Flame at Sedgefield. The gelding kept on well but lacked a turn of pace and one win in six outings prior to that start tells its own story.
The rest of the field look to be on a fact finding mission as Crafty Roberto makes his first start over hurdles for Jack Quinlan. The son of Intikhab was last seen finishing fourth of four on the flat of Italy in April and has been schooled over hurdles since.
James Bethnell's Bradbury is well exposed and actually won on his hurdles debut at Aintree but has since finished seventh to Hinterland over this distance. Dave Roberts' Scoglio is another well exposed sort, although he is yet to taste victory in sixteen starts and takes on hurdles for the first time.
