Stan James International Hurdle Odds: Overturn well supported with Sponsors

The betting for the StanJames.com International Hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday has been interesting this week, with Overturn in particular being well backed. Judging by the money for Overturn, who is 4/1 with the sponsors StanJames.com, he will run in the International despite his trainer Donald McCain Jnr saying he would next run the recent StanJames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle winner in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton.

Overturn running in the International Hurdle would certainly be a boon for the race, as will the presence of the surprise entry in this year’s International Hurdle, last year’s winner Menorah. The Philip Hobbs-trained Menorah was supposed to go chasing this season, but after unseating on his chasing debut it would appear that the astute Hobbs has had second thoughts about keeping Menorah over fences. Menorah is a 3/1 chance with StanJames.com and he was such an impressive winner of the International last year that a repeat of that form will make him hard to beat. The favourite for the International Hurdle is Nicky Henderson’s Grandouet, who is 11/4 to win with the sponsors. Grandouet is very well regarded by his trainer, but it is worth remembering that he is still only a four-year-old and horses of that age have won this race only twice since 1987. Though perhaps significantly, the last four-year-old to win was Binocular in 2008. Binocular, of course, is trained by Henderson.

One horse who could quite easily be overlooked is Brampour. Currently a 9/2 chance with StanJames.com, young Harry Derham is set to take the ride and this fact alone could contribute to Brampour’s odds lengthening on the day. Brampour has followed a tried and trusted route for International winner by winning the Greatwood Hurdle on his latest start. It is the same winning path Menorah followed in 2010.
