Cheltenham's Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle, registered as the Bristol Novices, typically produces some top class horses and Saturday's renewal looks as competitive as ever. Tom George's Halley is well fancied on his British debut and the French import can be backed at 5/2 in the betting for this three mile contest with bookmaker Bet365.
Recent winners of the Grade Two include Bindaree and Comply Or Die, who have both gone on to forge impressive chasing careers. Tom George will be hoping Halley can add his name to that list and the French Grade One winner looks to have every chance.
The 4-year-old was a Grade One winner over fences in his native country last month in a race that has been won by Long Run and Kauto Stone in the past two years. The manner of his victory on heavy ground over the 2 mile, 6 furlong trip would suggest that 3 miles shouldn't be a problem this weekend. Meanwhile, George has opted to revert Halley to hurdles as he would have to race outside of novice company over fences and he gets 4lbs from all but Brass Tax this weekend.
Paul Nicholls' Deireadh Re is well fancied after getting off the mark at the fourth time of asking at Worcester, where he stayed on dourly. The 5-year-old would prefer a slower pace as he has struggled to quicken when well placed, including a second at Ascot last month. The son of Old Vic is priced 9/4 favourite, although he has gone off favourite or joint favourite in all five starts so far, winning only once.
Tim Vaughan's Rev It Up has won three in a row and the 5-year-old is unbeaten in two starts since being bought for £30,000 in April. The gelding enjoys softer ground, with Cheltenham currently good and unlikely to firm, and enjoys setting the pace. He made all to win by six lengths over 3 miles at Ffos Las last time and was also a winner over 3 miles at Chepstow in October, with Bet 365 pricing him 3/1 third favourite.
Charles Byrnes' Sea Of Thunder (11/2) can have few excuses this weekend as he has been gaining plenty of experience over hurdles this season. This is the seventh outing of the season for the 6-year-old, with his last appearance yielding a second place in an extended 2 mile novices hurdle at Weatherby. The gelding should stay but he has plenty to find on his step up from 2 miles.
American Spin shouldn't have any problems getting the trip judging by the way he romped to a 12 length win over 3 miles, 3 furlongs at Fontwell in October. The 7-year-old has impressed on four outings over hurdles so far as he has yet to finish out of the places and Luke Dace's gelding could offer each-way value at 12/1.
Ben Case's Brass Tax (25/1) completes the field and the 5-year-old is an interesting entry after finishing second to Simonsig when a 66/1 ante-post chance at Ascot last month.
9/4 Deireadh Re
5/2 Halley
3/1 Rev It Up
11/2 Sea Of Thunder
12/1 American Spin
25/1 Brass Tax
