Peddlers Cross produced a flawless jumping display, when winning his first race over the bigger obstacles in the Golden Bears Beginners Chase at Bangor On Dee on Wednesday, suggesting that he has the potential to become the Champion Novice Chaser over two miles this season.
The market however for the Grade 1 Arkle Trophy Challenge Chase at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival remained largely unchanged with the Donald McCain trained stable star remaining with odds of around 6/1. The six year old gelding ran an absolute blinder of a race which saw him win comfortably from The Chazer without ever being stretched by either of his two rivals in what was just a three horse race.
Going off as an unbackable 1/8 odds on favourite the 2011 Champion Hurdle runner up lived up to the high expectations, he ran well within himself and completed the two mile 1 furlong race without making a single mistake, finishing 4½ lengths clear at the winning post.
McCain however did not get too carried away with the bloodless nature of the win, suggesting that his next appearance would be in a similar race again at Bangor in three weeks time. Only after that will McCain commit to making his intentions known for the horse for the rest of the season.
Some of the bookmakers immediately shortened his odds to around the 4/1 mark, however, Ladbrokes for instance have retained the 6/1 odds they had about him for the ‘Arkle’ before this win, which is the best price punters will currently find.
Peddlers Cross was one of the ‘talking horse’ of last season but his seven race unbeaten run came to an end when he met with defeat by the brilliant Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle last season, to who he finished 1¼ lengths behind in second place. There was of course no disgrace in that defeat but he did blot his copybook in the race immediately after Cheltenham, finishing well back in the Grade One Aintree Hurdle in April, behind Oscar Whisky. However, there were excuses that day but he is now back in the headlines, this time as a potential champion novice chaser and his win at Bangor suggests very strongly that this potential could be realised.

10/1 Menorah
