Three days of superb racing can be expected this week at Cheltenham’s Open Meeting at Prestbury Park this week, which as usual will be bringing a host of top quality National Hunt races to the ever adoring racing and betting public. Needless to say there will be a number of races for punters to get stuck into but equally as important will be the opportunity that the meeting provides for punters to take an early look at some of the new season’s more obvious prospects.
The feature betting race of the three days is the Grade 3 Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase which takes place on Saturday the second day of the meeting, but there are plenty of other Grade 3 and Listed races over the three days which will maintain the quality of the meeting, including the renowned Grade 3 Greatwood Hurdle over 2 miles.
Day One – Friday 11th November
The very open looking Grade 2 Sharp Novices Hurdle will take centre stage on this first day, but the race that will provide the biggest spectacle will undoubtedly be the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase. This race as usual has attracted the interest of several Irish raiders, including the great Garde Champetre who won this race in 2009.
Champion Irish trainer, Willie Mullins has also sent over Scotsirish and Uncle Junior to contest the race, while Fair Along from the yard of last year’s winning trainer, Phillip Hobbs, possibly has the best chance of success as far as the home front is concerned. Those betting on the race will no doubt take a good look at the market beforehand, where entries such as Gullible Gordon from the Paul Nicholls stable and Fort George another over from Ireland should be well supported.
Day 2 – Saturday 12th November
The Grade 2 JCB Triumph Hurdle Trail gets the day off to a very competitive start. It is a race that in the past has produced many notable winners, including former Champion Hurdler, Katchit who won here in 2005. Alan King who trained Katchit has the very highly rated Secret Edge in this who will undoubtedly attract plenty of betting support.
The Paul Nicholls trained Mon Parrain, who has a very decent weight advantage over some of the more obvious candidates, is attracting much of the betting to win the Paddy Power Gold Cup at 2.35. To win however he will have to finish in front of the 2011 Grade 2 Jewson Novice Chase winner and runner up, Noble Prince and Wishfull Thinking. Nonetheless Mon Parrain can still be backed with odds of 4/1 with paddy power to provide Nicholls a first win in the race. Punters are advised to ‘keep an eye’ on the entries in this race from trainer, Nigel Twiston-Davies, who has saddled the winner twice in the last three years.
Day 3 – Sunday 13th November
The Greatwood Handicap Hurdle is the best betting race of the day, but as usual it is a very open looking race where it is decidedly difficult to pick out the winner. The Favourite is likely to be the Phillip Hobbs trained, Pateese, winner of a handicap hurdle last weekend at Sandown and who is well weighted to follow up in this. He can be currently backed with odds of 6/1 which are available once again from Paddy Power.
The Galway Handicap Hurdle winner, Moon Dice, trained by Paul Flynn has made the trip over from Ireland clearly with the aim of winning this valuable handicap. The 6 year old certainly showed plenty of ability at Galway and before that when he won a similar race at Limerick. He would have a very obvious chance to make it three from his last three in this and has odds currently of 8/1 to do so.
