Just five runners go to post in Saturday's Park Stakes at Doncaster Racecourse. This is the final Group contest of the four day St Leger meeting at the Yorkshire track and is a Group 2 run over seven furlongs. Last year's winner was Balthazaar's Gift who returns for another stab at this race, but favourite is the Eve Johnson Houghton trained The Cheka at odds of 9/4 with Ladbrokes.
The Cheka has had a busy campaign and Saturday's race will be the geldings eighth race of the season. Barring a runners-up finish in the Listed Royal Windsor Stakes back in May, all of the five year old's races have been in Group company this season, with his solitary win the Group 3 Jury Stakes at Haydock in May. He's been very consistent this year and was fourth last time out in the Group 3 Supreme Stakes.
The Chris Wall trained Premio Loco is the second favourite at odds of 5/2 with Ladbrokes but is the top rated horse in the race. Officially rated six pounds higher than his market rival, the seven year old was last seen finishing fifth in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood in August. The gelding is yet to cross the finish line in first this season and you have to go all the way back to July last year for his last win, albeit the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes. He has four Group wins to his name and if he can find his best form here he'll certainly be there or thereabouts.
Third favourite is Dafeef at odds of 11/4 with Ladbrokes. The four year old trained by Willie Haggas was last seen finishing fifth behind Doncaster Rover in the Listed York Stakes, his only appearance of this season for his new stable. Previously with Godolphin, he showed decent enough form when beating top handicappers Deacon Blues and Bated Breath last August and deserves respect here.
Balthazaar's Gift won this race twelve months ago for trainer Clive Cox and isn't without a chance in this 2011 renewal. He's not figured at the sharp end of his races this season, albeit in some handy company. He was last in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes earlier in the season and hasn't really set the world alight in his three appearances since.
Duff is another former winner, scoring here in 2009 for trainer Edward Lynam. The eight year old has been incredibly busy in 2011, with Saturday's race set to be his twelfth of the year. He's not managed to win a race this year, second place at Naas in July his best effort. The pair of former winners are both available to back at odds of 7/1 with Ladbrokes.
9/4 The Cheka
5/2 Premio Loco
11/4 Dafeef
7/1 Balthazaar's Gift
7/1 Duff
