The fourth and final day of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster Racecourse gets underway with the Group 2 Champagne Stakes off at 2.05pm. This seven furlong contest for two year old colts and geldings has just the five runners, with the Willie Haggas trained Entifaadha likely to be sent off the short priced favourite.
Entifaadha has won on both of his starts this season, convincingly in a maiden at Newmarket in July and a very good display winning the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York last time out in August. Owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum and officially rated 105 he certainly looks the one to beat, especially given that he gets three pounds in allowance here. Bookmaker William Hill make him their even money favourite.
The John Quinn trained Red Duke is the 5/2 second favourite with William Hill and is officially the top rated horse in the race. He's had a busy campaign, winning a maiden in June at Redcar and then beating the talented Chandlery by a neck in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in July. Chandlery reveresed the form in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last time out when Red Duke finished third and he'll need to improve on that performance to trouble the maket leader here.
Daddy Long Legs is the entry of Aiden O'Brien who won this race with Super Pistachio in 2008. The 5/1 chance with William Hill has only had the one run this year as a two year old, winning a maiden contest at Gowran Park last month. There's nothing special about his form but her's sure to improve for a second run here.
Richard Hannon trained 10/1 chance Trumpet Major, who will be ridden by Richard Hughes. The most experienced of these two year olds, the 104 rated colt has run six times this season, winning twice and finishing second once. An early season maiden winner, he found the Group 1 Coventry Stakes too hot to handle at Royal Asacot before coming back with a decent second in a listed contest and a win over seven furlongs at Newmarket. He finished last on his most recent effort on the soft going in Sandown's Solraio Stakes and needs to show some improvement here.
Godolphin and Frankie Dettori have won the last two runnings of this race but the stable don't have an entry in this year's renewal, having won the fillies equivalent with Lyric Of Light in Friday's May Hill Stakes at the track. Dettori however picks up the ride for Peter Chapple-Hyam onboard Al Khan who was beaten five and three quarter lengths by Saturday's favourite and is the outsider of the field.
