2011 St Leger Tips: Sea Moon Hard to Oppose in Final Classic at Doncaster

Sea Moon punters will be well pleased with the news from Doncaster that the going may have just enough cut in it by Saturday to suit the chances of the St Leger favourite. The Sir Michael Stoute trained colt remains a solid 11/8 favourite with Boylesports and is a horse who has received a multitude of tips to win the race as well as plenty of support in the St Leger antepost market.

Sea Moon certainly sprang to prominence when winning the Group Two Great Voltigeur Stakes at the York Ebor meeting, a highly reliable trial for the final classic of the season. The grandson of dual Arc de Triomphe winner, Alleged, hosed up by 8 lengths at York from what was considered at the time as a top class field that included the Aidan O’Brien entry, Seville who had gone off as the 5/6 odds on favourite. Tips galore about Sea Moon going on to win the St Leger have since been made by a wide ranging group of racing tipsters and analysers which have become louder as the race looms ever closer. The race takes place on the fourth day and is the main feature of the Annual St Leger Meeting at Doncaster.

O’Brien has decided to take on Sea Moon again with Seville, but the Irish Derby runner up would certainly have a lot to find given the result of the ‘Great Voltigeur’. Seville also looks likely to be the only entry from Ballydoyle, with rumours strong that both Wonder Of Wonders and Freedom will be withdrawn by the yard. The race is the last chance this season that the Ballydoyle stable will have to win an English Classic, a feat they have not achieved since Henrythenavigator won the 2000 Guineas in 2008. There have been a few tips emanating from Ireland that Seville will be better suited by the longer St Leger trip but at best he looks like an Each Way chance only, who has current odds of 8/1.

Another in receipt of a number of high profile tips is Blue Bunting from the Godolphin owned yard of Mahmood Al Zarooni. This filly has been a revelation this season, winning three major Group One races, the 1000 Guineas, the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks and she also won her maiden on this course as a two year old. She is a seriously strong battling sort who appears to relish close finishes and if she stays the 1m6f trip then she has every chance of being there or thereabouts. She is one of three Godolphin entries, who, interestingly have supplemented the expected pacemaker, Ruhm for £45,000 and who also have Great Voltigeur fourth, Genius Beast in the race which Godolphin have won five times since 1995.

The Richard Hannon trained Census has also had his fair share of tips and has been backed into 4/1 currently with boylesports. Winner last time of the Group Three Geoffrey Freer Stakes over 1m5f at Newbury last month, this bay colt has not been outside of the first two in any of his four races this year, but was beaten 6 lengths by fellow St Leger entry, Brown Panther, in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. However, that form was reversed and a truer picture of the ability of the two emerged in the ‘Geoffrey Freer’, where Brown Panther finished 1½ lengths behind.

Brown Panther in fact has been subject of a number of online tips to win the race after the news broke that former champion jockey, Kieren Fallon would be getting the ride. Owned by Michael Owen and trained by Tom Dascombe who said that they believe that the horse would benefit by a more experienced rider on board after two disappointing runs under Richard Kingscote since his Royal Ascot win. To that end the Bookmakers have shortened his price from 12/1 to 10/1.

The St Leger looks a good looking race, which on all known form should be won by the favourite, Sea Moon. If so, the stable might well take their chances with him in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for his season’s finale in just three weeks time at Longchamp.
