The Michael Jarvis trained, Opinion Poll heads the betting for the Group Two Doncaster Cup, over 2 miles and 2 furlongs, on Day Three of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster. The four year old who won the Group Two , Lonsdale Cup , over 2 miles at the York Ebor meeting is quoted at 3/1 by Bet365, but the betting is close with both Samuel at 4/1 and Motrice at 5/1 also being backed.

Certainly by carrying a 3Ib penalty into the race after his Lonsdale Cup win and having to go the extra two furlongs in this, will seriously test the son of Halling, but Jarvis is confident that his relaxed style of running should see him make the trip. The beneficiary of the 3Ib penalty could be Samuel who was a game second to Opinion Poll in the Lonsdale Cup, beaten by just ½ length, but it has to be said that it was Opinion Poll who was getting home the easier.

One very interesting runner is the Gordon Elliott trained, Dirar, winner of the Ebor Handicap and who before that had lifted top prize in the Galway Hurdle at the Galway Festival. He will be running in Pattern Company for the first time since 2008, which means that although he will have the stamina, he will be stepping up massively in class. The Elliott yard nonetheless are confident of a big run, they were persuaded to run him by jockey, Jamie Spencer, who is extremely confident about his chances. Elliott of course has pulled off unlikely wins before and although we do not think he will be good enough we do think he has excellent each way chances at 9/1 with Bet365.com.
Whenever Sir Mark Prescott has an entry in a big race, punters will always sit up and take note and Motrice; his entry in this is certainly worthy of respect. The 3 year old, will also be stepping up in class and trip after winning at 1 mile and 6 furlongs at handicap level before coming third over that trip, last time in the Group Three, Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood. This race looks a race too far for the son of Motivator, but like Gordon Elliott, there is always the 'Prescott factor' to think about, before making a bet, but certainly we would not deter anyone from backing him with odds of 5/1.
The Marcus Tregoning trained, Askar Tau, who won this last year after winning the Lonsdale Cup beforehand has been off track most of this season after finishing well down the field in the Group Three Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in April. On that form he would have little chance of a repeat win so is best left alone this time.
