John Smith Cup Odds: Demolition Job Expected at York

Trainer, Richard Fahey will be heavily in the spotlight and the man to follow, at York this Saturday as he tries to win the John Smith Cup for the third time in four years. He comes to the Knavesmire, mob handed too, with five runners in the race, each with some sort of chance, but the one we like is Demolition, a 16/1 chance with VC Bet who will be ridden by champion jockey favourite, Paul Hanagan.

To win the race however, Demolition will have to improve from his last run, when a well beaten second behind Dangerous Midge in the Bet365 Old Newton Cup at Haydock last week, but he is on a good mark and will be suited by the ground and the drop in trip.

He will also have the dangerous looking Imposing to deal with, who is the likely favourite for the race. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, this 4 year old has Group Race potential and may be the class horse in the race, judging by the second place he achieved in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot last month. He will also be suited by the drop in trip and at 4/1 with Victor Chandler he should not be ignored.

Wigmore Hall, trained by Michael Bell is another who has strong claims, despite his high number draw. He looked like a good thing last time when a very promising third in the Hampton Court Stakes, at Royal Ascot, in which the three year old came very late that day but was going the best at the finish. That run strongly suggested that the ground and the distance might suit meaning Wigmore Hall should not be overlooked with odds of around the 6/1 mark.

Worthy of mention we think is the claims of the Jeremy Noseda trained, Royal Destination, who, arguably would have won last time in the 9 furlong Ladbroke.com Stakes at York last month. He was hampered and never got anything like a decent run in the race, but showed enough towards the end to suggest he will come on for the run and will improve over 10 furlongs. At 14/1 with VC Bet Bookmakers he would be our recommendation to Each Way backers.
