It would appear that the Irish raider, Requinto will go off as the favourite for the opener, the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes over 5 furlongs at Doncaster on Friday. Currently he has been given odds of 7/2 to win the race by Bet365 but they like other Bookmakers cannot split those immediately behind the David Wachman trained colt in the market.
Requinto was last seen trying his luck against the older sprinters in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at the York Ebor meeting last month, but despite being sent off with odds of 5/1 he only managed to beat two of the fifteen runners home and was nine lengths behind the winner, Margot Did. A couple of excuses could be made for him for the last run, firstly he was the only juvenile in the race and secondly the good to soft ground did not suit him at all. Before that of course, Requinto shot to stardom with a most impressive win in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, where despite being hampered at halfway bolted home in great style winning by 1¼ lengths from the Ed Dunlop trained, Burwaaz, who opposes again in this. If back to his best and there is no further heavy rain then Requinto would certainly have a big chance to get back to winning ways. Favourites have a good record in the race in recent years with four winning since 2003.
Despite looking held by the favourite, Burwaaz has put in some very eyecatching performances this season. His second place, 4½ lengths behind the current 2012 Two Thousand Guineas favourite, Harbour Watch in the Earl of Euston Conditions Stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket in early July gave a strong indication of the colt’s ability. He didn’t run too badly last time out in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes also over six furlongs at York last month, when third behind the very useful Casper Netscher. Back to five furlongs on Friday, his trainer believes that he can produce his best form and should be there or thereabouts at the finish. He is currently co-second favourite of four all with odds of 5/1.
Richard Hannon who saddled the winner of this race 12 months ago and also won the race in 2005 is represented this time by none other than Lilbourne Lad. He too has odds of 5/1 and has form lines with Requinto and Burwaaz having finished in front of both of them in two separate races. He looked a more than useful juvenile when winning his maiden first time out at Doncaster over five furlongs back in May and has since won twice, both in Ireland, firstly in the Listed Alfred Nobel Rochestown Stakes over six furlongs at Naas in June, where Requinto could only manage to finish last of the five runners. He followed that up three weeks later with victory in the Group Two Railway Stakes at the Curragh, also over six furlongs. He was last seen finishing second behind Casper Netscher in the ‘Gimcrack’ last month where he crossed the line just a head clear of Burwaaz in third. Now back running in only his second five furlong race, Hannon obviously thinks he has sufficient speed to win and he too should be ‘in the mix’ at the finish.
Also with odds of 5/1 available from bet365is the Peter Chapple-Hyam trained filly My Propeller an impressive winner of the Listed Julia Graves Roses at York three weeks ago. She will be one of the candidates to take them along at a good gallop ‘early doors’ but she has already proven that she has a very strong finish and is the type to be able to ‘steal a march’ on her rivals.
Although well beaten, when going off the 7/2 jolly in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York last month, the Charles Hills trained Angels Will Fall did win her first two starts in very good style. The second of those saw her impressively take the Group 3 Princess Margaret Juddmonte Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot. However she proved that she has great pace over the shorter trip too when winning her maiden first time out at Windsor in May. She too has odds of 5/1.
This looks to be a very interesting race in the making with cases able to be made for all those at the head of the market and one or two that are not. The key to finding the winner lies in the judgement of sheer pace as this race will be the first for many of them over the shortest trip for some time. The one however who looks like a real five furlong specialist in the making is the favourite, who has improved enormously since his defeat by Lilbourne Lad as his win in the 'Molecomb' demonstrated.
7/2 Requinto
5/1 Burwaaz
5/1 Lilbourne Lad
5/1 My Propeller
5/1 Angels Will Fall
9/1 Kohala
14/1 Vocational
25/1 Miss Lahar
25/1 Caledonia Lady
50/1 On The Dark Side
