Richard Fahey’s exciting two year old Wootton Bassett puts his three race unbeaten record on the line in the Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 Stakes at Doncaster on Thursday, the second day of the St Leger Festival. The odds of 13/8 from Paddy Power certainly suggest that the speedy DBS Premier Yearling winner is the one to beat in the race and if anything at all those odds will shorten considerably before the race, particularly as Fahey believes the colt to have improved since that York run.
It is not altogether certain whether or not he has classic potential, but he has been entered for the 2011 Irish 2000 Guineas, which allows plenty of time for him to come to himself as a three year old. He certainly has the beating of the Richard Hannon trained Bahceli as well as the Michael Jarvis runner, Forjatt. They have both finished behind him this season and both would need to make up a couple of lengths.

Murbeh trained by Brian Meehan and Madany by Barry Hills are two hot prospects for owner, Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. Murbeh in particular looked very impressive when winning the DBS St Leger Yearling Stakes at Ripon just over two weeks ago, where he had several previous winners well beaten. It was his second win in two starts and he like Wootton Bassett will improve for the run. He has been entered for this race as opposed to the Group Three Mill Reef Stakes, but connections admit it was for mercenary reasons only as they strongly believe he is in with a big chance for the big money prize available by winning this. Murbeh can be backed at 7/1 with PaddyPower.
Madany has had two wins and two seconds in five starts, but did not look up to the mark last time out when third behind Puddle Duck in a good quality Nursery over six furlongs at York last month, but the stable are still very much behind her and believe that she has still to run to her potential. She would certainly have a squeak if at her best but would be no better than an each way option as far as we are concerned. She is currently fluctuating in the market at around the 16/1 mark, which we think are excellent value.
Button Moon, second behind the Richard Hannon trained, speedster, Zebedee in the £100,000 Tattersalls Millions Auction Stakes at Newmarket last month looks a decent enough each way prospect too. She seems to enjoy her racing but as yet is to get herself into the winner’s enclosure after several near things. Her trainer, Ian Wood fancies her to run a big race and she may well be worth the risk with incredible odds of 66/1 being offered by paddypower.
