July Cup Betting: Fleeting Spirit Can Lower the Starspangledbanner

Fourteen runners will go to post for what promises to be one of the best sprint races of the season, the 2010 July Cup over 6 furlong on the Newmarket July course. Favourite ahead of the race is the Australian 4 year old, Starspangledbanner, now trained by Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle. He is a best price currently of 13/8 with Bet365 with next best at 4/1 being the Jeremy Noseda trained, Fleeting Spirit, winner of this race in 2009.

2010 July Cup Odds Comparison and Race Background

The two favourites met in the recent Group One, Golden Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot, which Starspangledbanner won, with Fleeting Spirit a fast finishing 4th, but Noseda remains undeterred like several other trainers who after being beaten at Royal Ascot seem more than prepared to take him on again.

In fact the first four home in the Golden Jubilee will be in the race, Society Rock, who came second, is said by trainer, James Fanshawe to be in great form at home, and should improve, even though the Bookmakers do not seem so convinced where most have him around the 8/1 mark. The American flyer, Kinsale King, who was third home at the Royal meeting, however has received plenty of recent support for him to reverse that form.

Other major contenders will be the Barry Hills trained, Equiano, winner of the Group One, Kings Stand Stakes, also at Royal Ascot meeting. This incredibly quick 5 year old has already won three times this season, but his last three runs have been over what is his preferred distance of five furlongs and will need to carry his natural speed for the additional furlong in this. This is probably why he is only a 14/1 chance with Bet365.com.

Former European champion sprinter, Marchand D’Or, is a welcome entry in the race, but will need to improve massively on his run in the Golden Jubilee, where he finished well down the field in 11th place. However the French 7 year old is certainly a class act and it would surprise nobody if he was to finish in the frame, which would therefore make his current odds of 14/1, also with bet365.com very attractive for each way backers.

For our money, we are going to take our chances on an improved run from Fleeting Spirit to storm home for a second successive victory in the race. The way he was finishing at Royal Ascot strongly suggested that he needed that run and if on top form now, for us anyhow, he will be the one to beat.
