It would appear that only a disappointing seven runners will go to post for the Grade One, Maghull Novice Chase at Aintree on Grand National Day. They are headed in the betting by the Nicky Henderson trained, Finian’s Rainbow, who is 4/5 odds on with VC Betand on perusal of the field opposing him it is difficult see how anything else can win.
It is true that Finians Rainbow lost his seasonal three race unbeaten record last month in the Arkle ChallengeTrophy Chase at Cheltenham where he finished a well held second, just under three lengths behind Captain Chris..
That run at the Cheltenham Festival, effectively earned the eight year old the right to be regarded as the second best novice chaser over two miles in National Hunt racing and he should be good enough to confirm that form with Ghizao and Dan Breen who both are entered here. Ghizao finished fifth in the Arkle over 27 lengths behind Finians Rainbow, while Dan Breen, was a further five lengths worse off.
That said Ghizao, who is trained by Paul Nicholls and will be ridden by Ruby Walsh have been quite bullish about his chances and they are the form stable at theGrand National meeting thus far. They are also the most successful trainer and jockey of this race with Nicholls having trained five and Walsh has had three winning rides, including last year when Tataniano was successful. The pair also successfully combined in 2007 with the late Twist Magic and in 2003 with Le Roi Miguel. For him to win however over the same two miles distance is hard to see even if the course suits him more. With odds of 11/4 he might be the one to back in the forecast.
If Ghizao has little chance then there is even less of one for David Pipe’s Dan Breen, despite the fact that he has been out since that Cheltenham run to win a low grade two mile chase at Uttoxeter last weekend, the aim of which presumably was to get him right for this? Victor Chandler in fact make him an 8/1 chance to win but unless the favourite is brought down or falls it looks a daunting task.
One who has been backed a little is Starluck, who finished fifth behind Binocular in the 2010 Champion Hurdle and third behind him in the Grade One re-arranged Christmas Hurdle in January. He won however at the first time of asking over fences in February taking a modest novice chase at Huntingdon, before ‘fluffing his lines’ badly in the Paddypower.com Extra Places at Cheltenham Novices Chase where he only managed third place in a four runner field when a 2/5 odds on favourite. On that form it is almost impossible to see him getting close in this.
Of the remaining three, only Gilbarry, trained by Malcolm Jefferson has any real credibility but if his 16 length defeat at the hands of Dan Breen in a novice chase at Bangor last December is anything to go by, then perhaps he doesn’t. He is a serious long shot with odds of 66/1.
4/5 Finians Rainbow
11/4 Ghizao
5/1 Starluck
8/1 Dan Breen
66/1 Gilbarry
150/1 Romanesco
500/1 Classic Fly
