Joncol Price Slashed in Ryanair Chase Betting

The Paul Nolan trained Joncol delighted his connections with a battling performance to take the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown last weekend in a fantastic finish all the way to the line. Before winning however this huge horse, who stands 18 hands, had to fight off a determined Ruby Walsh on Cooldine, who had led virtually all the way. In the event, Joncol got up by a neck on the line and has subsequently had his odds for the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival cut from 10/1 into 6/1 with Bet365.

it was Joncol’s third attempt at a Grade One this season, having won his first when taking the John Durkan Chase in December. After that win, the plan was possibly to take on Kauto Star in the Gold Cup, however, he then ran third next time out behind the Paul Nicholls trained, What A Friend in the Lexus Chase which forced Nolan to re-think his schedule. That new schedule included the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, which according to Nolan had become his main seasonal target and although he is still likely to go for the Ryanair, it is no longer a priority, now that the Hennessy is in the bag.

Cooldine, in second place was far from disgraced in the race, showing a welcome return to form after pulling up in the Lexus. He has remained unmoved at 14/1 in Cheltenham Gold Cup market, also with Bet365, but he will have to improve significantly if he is to trouble the Gold Cup market leaders.
