Despite his lack of racing, the Paul Nicholls trained, Master Minded, remains clear favourite to win his third Champion Chase on the bounce at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival. Master Minded of course was discovered with a leg injury following his disappointing run in the Connaught Chase back in November, where he could only manage third place behind Well Chief and Mahogany Blaze. He currently leads the antepost market with odds of 7/4 more or less across the board including bet365.
Should Master Minded not run, then the race could be one of the most open for years, with no fewer than four horses disputing second favouritism. Twist Magic stablemate to Master Minded, appeared to be back to his absolute best when winning the Tingle Creek Chase in early December. Ridden that day by Ruby Walsh, the 8 year old ran out an easy winner by 15 lengths from 2009 Arkle Chase winner, Forpadydeplasterer with Well Chief and Big Zeb almost out of sight at the finish. Nicholls said at the time that Twist Magic was the second best 2 mile chaser in the country behind Master Minded suggesting that he should be backed in the race, if not to win but as an each way or dual forecast option.

Big Zeb in fact, despite his disappointing Tingle Creek run is still being backed for the race and is as short as 7/1 with some Bookmakers but can be backed at a generous 10/1 with bet365. Much of that betting confidence is due to Big Zeb’s performance last season in the Irish Champion Chase, where he almost beat Master Minded, losing only due to a mistake at the last. If he can return to that form then he will be a major force to be reckoned with.
Well Chief trained by David Pipe is a class act but is now an 11 year old with probably his best days behind him. He was second in the race back in 2005 behind the great Moscow Flyer and was second again in 2009 but was well beaten behind Master Minded. At best he would be an each way option with odds of 14/1 with Paddy Power.

Kalahari King second behind Forpadydeplasterer in the Arkle Chase in 2009 has yet to run this season, but if he can show the same form as last year, particularly when winning the Grade One, Maghull Chase at Aintree in April, he could be the surprise of the race, despite the fact that he still has something to find with Twist Magic and Forpadydeplasterer; he can be backed at a best price of 10/1 with Paddy Power.
6/4 Master Minded, 7/1 Twist Magic, 8/1 Forpadydeplasterer, Big Zeb, 10/1 Kalahari King, Petit Robin, Golden Silver, 12/1 Barker, 14/1 Well Chief, 33/1 BAR.
