Although he remains a 20/1 shot with William Hill, the Colm Murphy trained, Quito De La Roque has been shortened to around 12/1 with most other Bookmakers in the antepost betting market for the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup. His odds to win the ‘Gold Cup’ tumbled after his scintillating win the other day in the Grade 1 JN Wine Champion Chase over three miles at Down Royal, where he came from virtually nowhere to see off, amongst others, Sizing Europe, who had to content himself with a game second place.
It was one of the most exciting finishes imaginable, with the seven year old seemingly out of it with half mile to go. At one stage in-running he was as long as 279/1 on the betting exchanges but somehow, jockey, Davy Russell managed to pick him up just as the soft ground caused the two leaders, Sizing Europe and The Nightingale to flounder and he went past them both in the final furlong to win going away.
It was Quito De La Roque’s sixth Chase win in seven starts over the bigger obstacles and his second at Grade 1 level, form, which clearly gives him every chance in the ‘Gold Cup’ come the Cheltenham Festival next March. Murphy has suggested that he will next be seen in the Grade 1 Lexus Chase at Leopardstown at Christmas, before any final decision is made as to his participation at Cheltenham.
Others whose odds have also been shortened for the Gold Cup is the Donald McCain trained, Weird Al, the very impressive winner of the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby a fortnight ago, where he finished 3½ lengths in front of another Gold Cup fancy, Time For Rupert. Weird Al is now as short as 14/1, while Time For Rupert, who lost nothing it seems in that defeat is a general price of 12/1 in the betting although a best price of 16/1 is still available for him with williamhill.
Despite unseating his rider at the last fence, when looking the likely winner of the Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup Chase on his seasonal reappearance last week at Exeter, Captain Chris, trained by Phillip Hobbs is still being backed for the season’s most important Chase. It was a clear case of needing the run at Exeter and the seven year old, who won the Grade 1 Arkle Challenge Trophy at the 2011 Festival, will now be aimed at the King George Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day where he will do battle with champion Long Run. William Hill have now shortened Captain Chris’s price from 16/1 to 14/1 in the betting for the ‘Gold Cup’ and to 8/1 for the ‘King George’.
Long Run meanwhile will be first seen this season in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park in a fortnight’s time for which he is the current even money favourite in the betting to win. The Nicky Henderson trained six year old is also the 5/4 favourite to win a second ‘King George’ and the 5/2 antepost favourite to win a second successive ‘Gold Cup’.
Obviously a much clearer picture will emerge following the conclusion of the ‘Betfair’, a race which, in addition to Long Run has also attracted Time For Rupert, Diamond Harry as well as the former Cheltenham Gold Cup champion, Kauto Star.
Of the rest only Wishfull Thinking, also from the Hobbs stable, Denman and Master Minded both trained of course by Paul Nicholls has attracted any antepost betting support with all three being given odds of 14/1 while Kauto Star is as long as 33/1.
5/2 Long Run

14/1 Wishfull Thinking
14/1 Master Minded
14/1 Denman
16/1 Time For Rupert
16/1 Weird Al
