Eleven runners are set to go to post in the first Group race of the St Leger Meeting, the Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes. This Group 3 contest is for fillies and mares only, run over seven furlongs at Doncaster Racecourse. This competitive looking race is headed in the betting by the John Oxx trained Alanza at odds of 3/1 with bookmaker Ladbrokes. The three year old is Oxx's first runner in Britain this season and could go very well here.
Alanza is the daughter of Dubai Destination and owned by HRH Aga Khan. Run only once as a two year old winning a maiden at Listowel last year, the three year old hasn't been out of the frame on her four starts this season. A winner on both of her most recent starts, both in Listed company she likely has more to offer and expect her to make her move from well off the pace.
Second favourite with Ladbrokes is the Sir Henry Cecil trained Chachamaidee at odds of 7/2. This improving filly has run well with a hood on her last three starts, winning most recently the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Before that she was second in behind Lolly For Dolly in the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot and it's no surprise she is near the head of the betting.
Next best is the 6/1 shot Seta trained by Luca Cumani. She ran well finishing third in a Listed contest at Slaisbury last time out but should imprve here for the drop in trip. She was a well beaten eighth in the Windsor Forest Stakes but has won at seven furlongs twice last year in Listed company.
Ladbrokes can't seperate 8/1 shots Flambeau and Dever Dream in the betting, the latter of whom finished second in the Oak Tree Stakes, two and three quarter lengths behind Chachamaidee on her last but one run. She is a course and distance winner, actually winning this race last year when it was only a Listed contest. She needs to show some improvement to reverse the form with the Cecil horse here.
Flambeau is trained by Henry Candy and was an impressive winner of a seven furlong Listed race at Leicester earlier in the season. She has excuses on here latest two runs, including trhe Group 3 at Newmarket where she went off far too fast. She has claims here with a return to form at a decent price.
Further down the betting is 9/1 chance Jacqueline Quest. The four year old trained by Ian Williams was second behind Libranno in the Group 3 Supreme Stakes at the end of August. She was outbattled on that day and Richard Hughes could get a tune out of her and another who could run well at a decent price.
Rimth has a Group 3 win to her name, winning the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury last April, but the form from that race hasn't really worked out. Add to that a disappointing Longchamps effort over eight furlongs and fourth in the Chachamaidee race at Goodwood. A poor attempt at Pontefract last time out, it would be a surprise if she made the frame.
3/1 Alanza
7/2 Chachamaidee
6/1 Seta
8/1 Dever Dream
8/1 Flambeau
9/1 Jacqueline Quest
12/1 Rimth
20/1 Off Chance
