The DFS Park Hill Stakes is the highlight of Thursday's second day of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster Racecourse. The betting is headed by the Queen's horse Set To Music who can be backed at odds of 9/4 with Paddy Power. This Group 2 contest over one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards has been won in the past by such horses as Hi Calypso, Allegretto and Alexander Dee Three.
Michael Bell trains the market leader, who comes to Doncaster on the back of four straight wins. The three year old rattled of a hat-trick earlier in the summer in classified and handicap company before really progressing when winning the Listed Galtres at York last time out. That was following a step up in trip to 1m4f and suggestions would be that another two furlongs should pose no problem. A course winner earlier this season, this Queen owned filly could take the beating.
Joint second favourites are Meeznah and Sense Of Purpose at odds of 3/1 with Paddy Power. Meeznah is the top rated horse in the race on offical figures, three pounds better than the market leader. Trained by David Lanigan, Frankie Dettori will take the ride on Thursday and has reasons to be bullish as if the filly runs to her best she will be right up there. At her best when winning the Group 3 Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, she ran an absolute stinker last time out though finishing 47 lengths behind the winner in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes. She's a Group winner however and the trip shouldn't be a problem.
Sense Of Purpose is an Irish raider for trainer Dermot Weld. The four year old is enjoying a good season, winning the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown last time out and also winning a Listed contest at the same track earlier in the summer. Second behind the impressive Banimpire in the Noblesse Stakes, she's certainly been mixing it in decent enough company to be considered a threat here.
Further down the betting is the Clive Cox trained Polly's Mark at 11/1 with Paddy Power. Richard Hughes picks up the ride onbaord this popular five year old who was fourth in this race last year and also fourth behind Meeznah at Goodwood in July. She has five and a half lengths to make up on her market rival on that performance and also five and a quarter lengths to find on Set To Musci who she finished third behind on her last start at York. The odds suggest she'll find a couple too good here.
12/1 shot Spin is the entry of Aiden O'Brien, who finished behind Set To Music and Polly's Mark in that August York contest. She recorded a decent second in Listed company last time out at Galway but it'll be a surprise if she's good enough to feature here.
Cracking Lass is also a 12/1 chance, second in that Listed race at York when wearing blinkers for the first time but has flattered to decieve on both attempts at one mile six furlongs and is best avoided here, along with Goldplated who is the outsider of the field at 25/1.
9/4 Set To Music
3/1 Meeznah
3/1 Sense Of Purpose
11/1 Polly's Mark
12/1 Spin
12/1 Cracking Lass
25/1 Goldplated
