Great Voltigeur Stakes winner, Rewilding, trained for Godolphin by Mahmood Al Zarooni is a very warm order favourite in the betting for the final classic of the 2010 season, the St Leger, which will be raced at Doncaster this coming Saturday. Already as short as 6/4 with most Bookmakers, Rewilding can still be snapped up at 13/8 with Paddy Power.
The market is certainly confusing when it comes to second favourite however, with nothing to choose between the next five, Midas Touch, Dandino, Snow Fairy, Joshua Tree and Arctic Cosmos who are all around the 6/1 to 7/1 mark.
Rewilding had both Midas Touch and Joshua Tree well beaten in the ‘Voltigeur’ over 1 mile and 4 furlongs on York’s Knavesmire course and looks like he could sustain that form over the extra two furlongs, and provide Godolphin with their sixth success in the race. Rewilding will also have the added advantage of a pacemaker in the form of Corsica a move that has been approved by the authorities; he will certainly be hard to beat on all known form.
Latest Odds Comparison for the Doncaster St Leger
Aidan O’Brien, trainer of both Midas Touch and Joshua Tree remains upbeat about the chances of both his main entries and why not. Midas Touch was giving Rewilding 3lb at York and is still very much on the upgrade. A further improvement here over the extra two furlongs must put him well in contention. Joshua Tree is certain to come on from his run in the Great Voltigeur, it was his first run for nearly a year, after winning the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot as a two year old. He is highly regarded at Ballydoyle and a big run is fully anticipated. Punters should note which of the two Johnny Murtagh chooses to ride although that is not necessarily good advice after watching Murtagh come second on Rip Van Winkle last week to stablemate Cape Blanco in the Irish Champions Stakes at Leopardstown last weekend. Nonetheless both Joshua Tree and Midas Touch can be backed at 7/1 with PaddyPower.
It is probably safer to ignore the claims of dual Oaks winner, Snow Fairy to win this race as she will almost certainly miss it should there be too much rain and the forecast is not good . Instead it is worth looking at the chances of the James Given trained Dandino, who has been backed with big each way money all week. After looking a good thing in handicap company, he was stepped up in class last time and looked like he could do with the longer trip when finishing very quickly in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes over 1 mile and four at Goodwood in July. We certainly would not be putting anyone off backing him on an each way basis with odds of 7/1.
