A thrilling renewal of the Queen Anne Stakes looks to be in store when the Group One race raises the curtain on Royal Ascot next Tuesday. The build up to the 1 mile race has been dominated by Canford Cliffs and superstar mare Goldikova, with the former just edging favouritism at 11/10 in the betting with Paddy Power.
Richard Hannon's Canford Cliffs will meet Goldikova for the first time as the 4-year-old looks to extend a four race unbeaten run. The colt was a convincing winner of the Lockinge Stakes on his seasonal reappearance and it was a performance that further enhanced his excellent reputation as he again showed an exceptional turn of foot that will be well and truly tested by Goldikova at Royal Ascot.
Goldikova, a triple Breeders Cup Mile winner, is defending champion after she became the first mare to win the Queen Anne in more than 50 years in 2010, and she is an industry best 6/4 with PaddyPower to successfully defend her title this year. Trainer Freddy Head has declared he is delighted with her preparations and she will bid to achieve another Queen Anne 'first' by becoming the first 6-year-old winner of the race since it was granted Group One status in 1984.
She certainly has plenty of Group One experience having picked up thirteen Group or Grade One wins during a career that has seen her finish outside of the places only once in 22 starts. Head's mare was an impressive winner of the Prix d'Ispaton on her seasonal reappearance last month as she beat the race-fit Cirrus Des Aiglesby by a neck.
Furthermore, Goldikova will bid to become only the fifth horse to win the Queen Anne Stakes more than once and the first since 1907, although she will have her work cut out against the impressive Canford Cliffs, with the rest of the field seemingly competing for place money.
Hannon's Dick Turpin is the next best in the betting at 10/1 with PaddyPower.com after running his stablemate, Canford Cliffs, close in the St James's Palace Stakes last June. The 4-year-old has since been well beaten in 2011 by both Goldikova, by 34 lengths when ninth of nine at Longchamps, and by Canford Cliffs, when fourth in the Lockinge.
Aidan O'Brien's Dubai World Cup third Cape Blanco is also 10/1 as the 2010 Irish Derby and Irish Champion Stakes winner makes the step up to a mile for the first time.
Elsewhere, Roger Charlton has indicated that 20/1 punt Cityscape will only run at Ascot if the ground softens, while Saeed Bin Suroor currently boasts five entries.
Bin Suroor is a seven time winner of the Queen Anne Stakes and the best of his team looks to be Rio De La Plata, at 20/1 with Paddy Power. The 6-year-old was third in the Diomed Stakes on his seasonal reappearance at Epsom and could be paired with six time Queen Anne winning jockey, Frankie Dettori, although they look to face a tough task against the market leaders Canford Cliffs and Goldikova.
