The Topham Chase gives trainers and jockeys alike a trial run of the Grand National course before Saturday’s event and this year’s renewal looks to be an extremely open contest.
Like so many of the races over the three days the Paul Nicholls, Ruby Walsh combination will be teaming up with another favourite as they saddle Mon Parrain who is 9/2 with Paddy Power. The five-year-old French import burst on to the British racing scene with a blistering performance in a competitive handicap chase at Sandown. Even Nicholls was flabbergasted by the gelding’s performance that day as he stormed away from his rivals by 22 lengths. He was raised 16lbs for that success and he still appears to be sat on a winnable mark and if he improves again he could steamroller this quality field and another name could be a star attraction at the Ditcheat yard.
Nevertheless, with a field of 30 runners going to post there is bound to be some lively opposition to Mon Parrain. Frankie Figg has become a regular in races run over the National fences and his front-running style will certainly stand him in good stead here and he is 12/1. Brian Hughes is bound to send the Howard Johnson-trained nine-year-old to the front once more and his jumping is a pleasure to watch, however he can make the odd glaring error, like the one which saw him unseat in this race last year. You will have you hand in your mouth for the whole race as his exuberant leaps have you on tenterhooks, but if he jumps round must stand a great chance of emulating his Grand Sefton win over the fences in this year’s Topham.
Alfa Beat was all the rage going into the four-mile contest at the Cheltenham Festival but he just lacked the staying power and a return to 2m 5f today will be a huge plus and he is 14/1. A five-times winner before that fourth behind Chicago Grey at Cheltenham, Charles Byrnes-raider runs off a nice mark and with Adrian Heskin taking 5lbs off is back is one to watch.
Consigliere ran an extremely eye-catching race in the Byrne Group Plate off top weight at Cheltenham last month and at 25/1 with Paddypower is a definite each-way contender. For much of the race he travelled well for Tom Scudamore, but when push came to shove he could find no more under 11st 12lbs. However, he is running off the same mark again today but with only 11st 2lb on his back, is an interesting contender.
Of the others, Fistral Beach was a huge disappointment in the Racing Post Chase when pulling up but a return to form could see him go close at 25/1, whilst you can’t ignore last year’s winner Always Waining who runs off a 5lb higher mark this year and is 14/1.
9/2 Mon Parrain
9/1 Dev
12/1 Frankie Figg
14/1 Fine Parchment
14/1 Always Waining
14/1 Stormin Exit
14/1 Alfa Beat
16/1 Scotsirish
20/1 Bar
