Will it be ‘party time’ at the Hollow Bottom public house this coming Saturday evening? That is a question that is being asked more and more as the 2010 Grand National gets ever closer, with many plaudits believing that the Hollow Bottom co-owner, Nigel Twiston-Davies can win the Grand National for the third time.
The popular Cotswold trainer has already tasted glory this season by winning National Hunt’s most prestigious prize, the Cheltenham Gold Cup and he has a team of six Grand National runners who now aim to bring home the richest.
Aintree Grand National Odds Comparison
One very interesting aspect of the Twiston-Davies runners is that all six are quite low in the handicap, with only Beat The Boys carrying 11st or more. He in fact carries 11 stone exactly, but the main stable contender, Irish Raptor, with stable jockey, Paddy Brennan on board is on a really good mark of 10-7 and has come in for considerable support in the betting. Although doubts linger about him making the trip, this 11 year old won the Topham Chase over the Grand National fences on good ground, last year and has been aimed at this year’s race ever since. Bookmakers generally have priced Irish Raptor up at around the 28/1 mark, but he is still available at 33/1 with Ladbrokes

One of the six who should easily get the trip is Hello Bud, winner of the 2009 Scottish Grand National. He will be ridden by the trainer’s son, Sam Twiston-Davies, who rode him last time when 7th behind Ballabriggs in the Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last month. He is on an excellent mark and he will enjoy the ground at Aintree and has a price currently of 40/1 with Ladbrokes.
Probably the third string from the stable is the 10 year old Ballyfitz, who has a bit of class about him and finished a very creditable fifth in the Welsh National in December. He too is on a good mark; he is a sound jumper and will almost certainly get the trip. At 66/1 he might be a reasonable pick for each way backers.
In fairness the other three runners, Beat The Boys, Ollie Magern and Knowhere are not the horses they once were and are running more for the pleasure of their owners rather than looking to win the race on merit.
Nigel Twiston-Davies Grand National Runners Odds
33/1 Irish Raptor
40/1 Hello Bud
66/1 Ballyfitz
100/1 Beath The Boys
100/1 Knowhere
150/1 Ollie Magern
