It must be disappointing for the organisers at Aintree to see such a small field take on Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Imperial Commander in this Grade 1, Totesport Bowl. However there are some interesting facts surrounding the odds on favourite, who is priced at 10/11 in the betting to win this race by Paddy Power

One of those facts is that Imperial Commander has never won a Chase away from his home track of Cheltenham. Also interesting is that he has only ever won two races back to back once before and they came three years ago and both were at Prestbury Park. These are facts that suggest that this race is far from a foregone conclusion particularly with a horse’s of the calibre of Nacarat and the potential of What A Friend in the field.

On paper of course, Imperial Commander should comfortably win the race, he holds both Carruthers and Calgary Bay on the Gold Cup run alone; Carruthers was fourth and Calgary Bay sixth and holds What A Friend and Nacarat on form lines through Denman and Kauto Star. Nonetheless as stated above, form seems ‘to go out of the window’ with Imperial Commander, once he hits a track other than Cheltenham.

What A Friend is the one we like the most to turn Imperial Commander over in this race. He is very highly regarded by Paul Nicholls and his team at Ditcheat and although he was well beaten by Denman in that historic Hennessy Gold Cup run back in November, he proved himself no slouch by coming back from that defeat to win the Grade One Lexus Chase at Leopardstown at the end of December.

He had horses of the calibre of Joncol and Voy Por Ustedes behind him that day and he is sure to improve from then until now. We therefore think that the 11/4 about him from Paddypower to win this race are not to be ignored and offer at least some value as opposed to the odds on favourite.
