With Cheltenham Festival just five weeks away, there were some interesting movements in the Champion Hurdle betting following victories for the Nicky Henderson pair of Binocular and Oscar Whisky on Saturday. Reigning Champion Hurdle winner and this year's ante-post favourite Binocular's odds were eased out by William Hill bookmakers following his unconvincing win in the Contenders Hurdle, while Oscar Whisky was trimmed after his success in the Welsh Champion Hurdle.
It is a familiar tale for Binocular as he produced a similarly lethargic performance in the Contenders Hurdle at Sandown last year before going on to claim Champion Hurdle glory in March. Hills drifted him out slightly from 5/2 to 3/1 for this year's Cheltenham Festival renewal following Saturday's race at Sandown. The 7-year-old was solid without being spectacular as preparations step up a notch for next month's festival and he had a real battle on his hands at the weekend as only a mistake by Ruthenoise at the last let him in for victory in a race he won by just one length last year.
Henderson will be slightly concerned by the performance of Binocular against an uninspiring field of three, but will be hoping that it is a repeat of last year's results. It turned out to be a good day for Henderson though as he enjoyed success later in the day with Oscar Whisky.
The 6-year-old sauntered to victory in the Welsh Champion Hurdle and WilliamHill.com clipped him in slightly from 16/1 to an industry best price of 14/1 in the betting for the Champion Hurdle. He showed off his credentials for the Festival as he won by eight lengths from Black Jack Blues at Ffos Las on Saturday. He will head straight to Cheltenham now as Nicky Henderson looks to record the remarkable feat of training three different Champion Hurdle winners in consecutive years.
The famous racecourse is the scene of Oscar Whisky's only career defeat to date though as he lost out to Menorah in the Supreme Novices last year. Menorah was clipped in from 11/2 for this year's Champion Hurdle by Hills after Binocular's unspectacular win, and the International Hurdle winner is well fancied at 5/1. Hurricane Fly is currently second favourite and was also trimmed at the weekend and can now be backed at 9/2 in the betting with Hills for what should be an enthralling renewal.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Evan Williams' Barizan came in fifth, 34 lengths back from Oscar Whisky, in the Welsh Champion Hurdle after the 5-year-old lost pace and is now as long as 66/1 for Cheltenham.
