2011 Welsh National Tips: Maktu Makes Sense for Chepstow Feature

Having already won the Midlands National at Uttoxeter back in March, there is little doubt that the Jonjo O’Neill trained Synchronised brings the best credentials into the rearranged Welsh National at Chepstow this Saturday. It is why we have made him one of our leading Welsh National tips and also why he has been made the favourite with most Bookmakers to win the race with VC Bet having shortened him to odds of 5/1. He will of course have champion jockey and sports personality of the year winner, Tony McCoy on board, who will be seeking a first win in the race which would compete a ‘grand slam’ of ‘Nationals’ for him, having won for the first time in the Grand National in April.

Picking the winner of a race such as the Welsh National is never easy of course, but using the form and stats of past winners, it will be noted that nine of its most recent winners have won around the Chepstow track in the past. Winners of the race are usually lightly weighted, strong chasers and have shown winning or at least very good form on soft or worse ground. Therefore punters are urged to have a close look at the Pat Murphy trained Maktu, who fits the picture in all of the above and who performed with great credit on his seasonal reappearance at Haydock Park in November, when second behind King Fontaine over three miles. Maktu had won over same course and distance last season in heavy going and King Fontaine has gone on to win again since, which all makes Maktu look great value with odds of 7/1 available from Victor Chandler and is our major Welsh National tip this season.

Because of the likely heavy going at Chepstow, the higher weighted horses are going to have to run seriously big races if they are going to be competitive, which is why we are going to leave most of them alone this year. However, we would not necessarily put off anyone from backing the 2009 runner up, Silver By Nature, despite being top weight. Trainer, Lucinda Russell is sending the nine year old down from Scotland where he has been training specifically for the race making it hard to imagine that he will do anything else other than put up a big performance again this year. At 14/1 he would be our each way tip for the Welsh National.
