The four day St Leger meeting gets underway at Doncaster Racecourse on Wednesday, with the Listed Scarbrough Stakes the highlight on day one. Twelve runners are set to go to post in this class 1 contest run over five furlongs. Favourite is the five year old Medicean Man trained by Jeremy Gask and ridden by Richard Hughes. The horse has been running in handicap company achieving a career high mark of 109 for this race and Stan James make him their 7/2 favourite.
Medicean man does have a course win to his name but he has been plying his trade down south in the main this season, with his last three runs coming at Ascot. Twice a winner in July at the Berkshire track, he finished second in the Shergar Cup Dash last time out when sent off the 100/30 favourite. He's been raised five pounds for that performance on official ratings and is likely to be sent off the favourite at Doncaster on Wednesday.
Second favourite is the Tim Easterby trained Captain Dunne at odds of 11/2 with Stan James. The six year old has had 47 runs under rules, winning seven times, but you don't have to go too far back for his last victory. Winner of the high profile Investec Dash on Derby day at Epsom, Captain Dunne has been running in and out of Group company this season and could well be the one to beat here. Second in a Group 3 sprint at Longchamp in May, he was well down the pack in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes two runs ago before finishing fourth in a Listed contest at Beverley last time out. His best form should give him a really good chance.
Dinkum Diamond is the next in the betting at odds of 6/1 with Stan James. The Henry Candy trained three year old is a nice sort who picked up a conditions stakes win at Newmarket two runs ago. He finished second behind Margot Did in a Listed race at Sandown in May, a horse who has since gone on to win the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes. That kind of improvement from Dinkum Diamond could see him go close here, but he was third in a listed contest last time out at Beverley. He was second over course and distance in last year's Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, but will perhaps prefer quicker ground with rain forecast.
The filly Duchess Dora is available to back at 13/2. The four year old trained by John Quinn finished ahead of Dinkum Diamond last time out in that Listed Beverley contest and was second behind Medicean man in one of his Ascot successes. A dual handicap winner this season at Pontefract and Chester.
Further down the betting Group Therapy is available to back at odds of 15/2 with Stan James. The six year old trained by David Barron was third in this race last year and was also third in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood two runs ago. Bear Behind is next in the betting at 14/1, the two year old is part owned by Michael Owen and has had some decent runs in Group company this season.
