Mount Mews To Scale New Heights With Top Novices Hurdle Victory

Nicky Henderson has dominated the Top Novices Hurdle by training five of the past seven winners but Malcolm Jefferson might just have an entry to contend in Friday's two-mile race at Aintree...

  • 21 of past 26 Top Novices Hurdle winners came from the front-four in the betting
  • 6 of the last 7 winners were ex-bumper horses

Henderson's Hunting Ground

Henderson's yard has been in ridiculously good form of late and there is much to like about his entry, River Wylde. A 5/2 favourite (Paddy Power) at the time of writing, the son of Oscar went unbeaten in his first three starts over hurdles before finishing third behind Labaik in the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham last month.

The quicker ground at Aintree might not suit though and we like the look of Mount Mews for Malcolm Jefferson, who won this race with a similar type in Cyrius Darius in 2015. Mount Mews is a dual-bumper winner and will relish quicker ground when bidding for a fourth win in five starts over hurdles.

The 6-year-old has only been beaten when giving away plenty of weight to the eventual winner at Wetherby earlier this year and a subsequent Grade 2 win at Kelso ensures he is well worth chancing at 3/1 (PaddyPower.com).

David Pipe's 2015 Champion Bumper winner, Moon Racer, is also available at 3/1 on his return to novice company after being pitched in at the deep end in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, where he was pulled up when nowhere near contending.

The Unit has been progressing well for Alan King, winning three of four starts to improve his rating by 20lbs, and he makes each-way appeal at 10/1 (Bet Victor).

The Rest

It is worth noting that 21 of the past 26 winners of the Top Novices Hurdle came from the front-four in the betting, although it would be dangerous to write off Paul Nicholls' High Secret (12/1), who proved to be a fine runner on the flat prior to winning twice over hurdles at Taunton.

Meanwhile, Chti Balko has won his past two starts but faces a big step up in class, as do Pingshou, who was well beaten in the Supreme, Bulkov and American Gigolo.
