Following the defection of Gold Cup hero Long Run the Totesport Bowl has lost some substance to it, but the six contenders who line up in Thursday's contest should still provide a cracking spectacle.
Denman is bound to go off a warm order and is currently 6/5 for the contest with Paddy Power after finishing a gallant second in this year's Gold Cup for the third year running. Turning for home the old stalwart managed to fend off stablemate Kauto Star, but the younger Long Run had too much for him in the closing stages to leave Paul Nicholls' charge in second place again.
At the age of eleven he must be in the twilight of his career and it is hard to gauge how much that Gold Cup slog took out of him and at 6/5, could he be too short? His one and only visit to Aintree ended in failure as he fell in the 2009 Bowl when sent off Evens favourite, so could he be worth taking on.
The front-running Nacarat has been a model of consistency in recent seasons and this year has been no different with his best run coming when finishing third to Long Run in the King George VI Chase. He has never been able to land a blow in this sort of company, but is bound to be thereabouts turning for home and if Denman does under-perform then he could capitalise and is currently 4/1 with PaddyPower. He bypassed the Cheltenham festival and the flat track is bound to suit and his freshness is bound to be a plus point for connections.
Punchestowns was all set for a glittering career over fences after making the transition from hurdles but it has been a sketchy beginning over the larger obstacles. Second in a World Hurdle, he had all the makings of a classy performer in chases but a lacklustre performance in the Argento Chase in January had followers scratching their heads incessantly. A graduation chase win at Kempton doesn't hold you with much confidence as Pasco went out far too quickly that day and set the race up for Punchestowns, who found himself off the pace for a long way. A huge improvement will be needed if he is going to land a blow in this contest and is currently 5/1.
Carole's Legacy mixes chasing with hurdling regularly and Nicky Henderson's mare is definitely one to watch at 13/2. A brave second behind the improving Bensalem in the Spinal Research Handicap Chase at Cheltenham she battled to the line and even though was beaten that day had some top handicappers behind her and she is very interesting. Gaining the sex allowance in this contest she is bound to run her race and with her current record of not being out of the first two in her last ten races must be respected.
Deep Purple is another who has failed to make that step up to Grade One territory and was a distant third in the Betfair Ascot Chase behind Riverside Theatre and could struggle at 8/1 along with the 40/1 outsider Follow the Plan.
In an average renewal of this 3m 1f contest Denman has the class and if on top form will carry these but the Gold Cup could have take a lot out of him and he may be worth taking on with the consistent Carole's Legacy.
6/5 Denman
4/1 Nacarat
5/1 Punchestowns
13/2 Carole’s Legacy
8/1 Deep Purple
40/1 Follow The Plan
