The Cheltenham Gold Cup, already being billed as the ‘race of the century’ gathered more exciting momentum with the announcement that champion jockey, Tony McCoy has accepted trainer, Paul Nicholls offer of the ride on Denman. The announcement, which was not wholly unexpected has added an exciting new dimension to the race, with it now having the best two jockeys in the world riding the best two steeplechasers in the world, probably for the best NH stable in the world.
The betting has not changed that much, Kauto Star and Ruby Walsh remain around the 5/4 mark and are the favourites, while Denman and McCoy are a best price of 9/4 with Ladbrokes
McCoy who has yet to ride Denman in a race will partner him in the Aon Chase next week at Newbury, is confident that Denman is back to his unbeatable best of 2008, when he won the Gold Cup with Kauto Star left in his wake. Kauto of course has already won the race in 2007 and came back to become the first horse to regain the Gold Cup in 2009, when he won the race comfortably, from a valiant Denman, who was far from his best.

This year the two horses have already set the racing world on fire, Kauto with his short head win over Imperial Commander in the Betfair Gold Cup in November and then of course with his fourth successive and biggest ever win in the King George Chase on Boxing Day. Denman has had just the one run, winning the Hennessy Gold Cup for the second time when carrying a massive 11-12 on his back and winning with such authority it was obvious that he had shaken off the illness that had beset his season last year.

For Sam Thomas, who rode Denman to his Gold Cup victory in 2008 it is a sad decision to drop him but as a consolation he has been offered the ride on Tricky Trickster for the Nicholls yard.
