Eleven runners were declared for the 2011 Ladbrokes St Leger at Monday's five day declaration stage. The Sir Michael Stoute trained Sea Moon has been installed the short priced favourite by sponsors Ladbrokes, at odds of 11/8 to win the final classic of the flat racing season. The colt comes up against some stiff opposition however, with four runners wit group winning experience and a Royal Ascot winner.
The lightly raced Sea Moon has only run twice this year and only twice as a two year old last season. A winner in three of his four starts, the three year old is unbeaten in 2011 following two wins at York earlier this summer. The first of these wins came in a handicap over one mile and two furlongs on the Knavesmire, before showing he could cope with a step up in trip when winning the Great Voltigeur Stakes in fine fashion last time out. Richard Hughes was in the saddle that day when he burnt up a decent field to win by eight lengths. Beaten that day include Sevelle and Genius Beast who re-oppose on Saturday.
Second favourite is the 1,000 Guineas and Irish Oaks winner Blue Bunting trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni for Godolphin who will be ridden by jockey Frankie Dettori. The stable have won this race twice in the past seven years and Dettori clearly loves the race habing won it three times during that period. Blue Bunting is one of two Godolphin runners in the race and looks a great bet at odds of 4/1 with Ladbrokes. The three year old filly has won the 1,000 Guineas at the start of the season and added the Irish Oaks to her Group 1 successes at the Curragh in July, In fact, the only blip of the fillies season came in the English Oaks at Epsom, where Frankie Dettori got a ban for dropping his hands near the finish. She added the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks to her CV last time out at York in August and goes up against the boys for the for first time on Saturday. She'll get a fillies allowance for her troubles is officially rated the highest and looks continually underrated based on her successes this season and the 4/1 looks very generous.
Next in the betting is Richard Hannon's entry, the 5/1 chance Census. The three year old finished second behind Brown Panther in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing second in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket and then overturning the form with Brown Panther last time out winning the Geoffrey Freer Stakes. The horse has clearly stepped up out of handicap company and improved twenty pounds since the start of the season, but it's another step up in class required here and giving away nine pounds on official racing with Blue Bunting, has plenty to do to win this.
The same could also be said of Masked Marvel, who is 8/1 with Ladbrokes in the betting. The John Gosden trained three year old beat Census last time out at Newmarket and also holds form over Namibian, who misses out this weekend. Eighth in the Epsom Derby, the son of Montjeu also finished well beaten by Genius Beast earlier this season and you'd expect a big jump up in form to trouble the market leaders here.
Further down the betting is the Aiden O'Brien entry Seville. Second behind Carlton House in the Dante Stakes, the three year old Galileo colt has finished runner up twice since and seems to always find at least one too good for him. Tenth in the Derby when well fancied (sent off at 13/2), he has since been beaten by stablemate Treasure Beach in the Irish Derby, second in the Grand Prix Du Paris at Longchamp before beaten out of sight by Sea Moon last time out at York. A good Group 1 runner, has had an official rating of 120, 5 lbs better off than Blue Bunting but it's whether he has that competitive edge to stick his neck out and win a big one.
Michael Owen owns Brown Panther who is next best in the betting at 10/1. The King Geirge V Stakes winner at Royal Ascot has targetted this race ever since but has been beaten twice since his Ascot success. Fifth in the German Derby, he was beaten one and a quarter lengths last time out by Census and you have to think he has a tall order on his hands to win a Group 1.
11/8 Sea Moon
4/1 Blue Bunting
5/1 Census
8/1 Masked Marvel
8/1 Seville
10/1 Brown Panther
33/1 Wonder Of Wonders
66/1 Genius beast
66/1 Buthelezi
100/1 Freedom
100/1 Rumh
