2011 Grand National Specials Betting: Odds suggest Irish eyes will be smiling

Bookmakers always concoct weird and wonderful betting specials for the Grand National offering punters an array of betting opportunities to keep them interested throughout the Aintree spectacle.

The Irish had a fantastic Cheltenham Festival and Blue Square have compiled a plethora of Irish markets based on the 4m 4f marathon and one that stands out is for the winner of the 2011 renewal to be trained in the Emerald Isle. Currently at 7/4, the Irish will send over some lively contenders including the front two in the market of The Midnight Club and Backstage. They also have the interesting Bluesea Cracker and a few runners a bit further down the betting who could feasibly land a blow in the historic contest.

Champion trainer at Cheltenham, Willie Mullins can wrap an awesome season if he can saddle the victor of the Grand National. Blue Sq make the Co Carlow handler a 6/1 chance to lift the trophy and with The Midnight Club being backed up by the trio of Dooneys Gate, Our Monty and most notably Arbor Supreme could give Mullins his second win in the race.

JP McManus bagged this event for the first time last season with Don't Push It and the 60 year-old has been priced up at 6/1 to win the race again. Not only does he have last year's winner running for him again but Friday saw him purchase Bluesea Cracker who is destined to run a huge race and Can't Buy Time who at 50/1 could be a lively outsider.

Carberry and Walsh are two names synonymous with the jumping sphere and both Nina Carberry and Katie Walsh will be donning the silks for Saturday's contest and Blue Square are 20/1 about a female jockey riding a winner. Carberry will partner Character Building whilst Walsh will be riding against brother Ruby on Our Monty.

Don't Push It's success off 11 stone 5lbs last year was somewhat of an anomaly as in the last 20 years only two winners have carried 11 stone or more, so it's unsurprising that Blue Square go 4/9 that this year's victor will carry under 11 stone. With some classy runners in this year's contest it wouldn't be inconceivable to have some takers of Blue Square's 7/4 about the 2011 winner carrying over 11 stone.

Although the fences have generally been altered for safety reasons you will still get a superfluity of runners not finishing and Blue Square are 2/1 that under 13 will finish with the favourite being between 13 and 17 finishers, but the 9/4 about over 17 finishers could be the value.

Even though at 4:15 on Saturday the nation will stop for the world's greatest steeple chase the top jockey of the three-day meeting will keep you interested throughout Thursday, Friday and Saturday. After bagging another crown at the Cheltenham festival Ruby Walsh will be the obvious man to choose and with him partnering some quality performers from Messrs Mullins and Nicholls including reigniting his partnership with Gold Cup second Denman in the totesport Bowl, must be the one to beat at 5/4.

Meanwhile Nicky Henderson will have a strong team heading to Liverpool, thus given Barry Geraghty some decent firepower. And then you can never discount AP McCoy who is bound to gain some plum rides over the meeting and at 7/1 could be dangerous.
