Irish Gold Cup Odds: Riches The One To Beat At Leopardstown
Saturday 6th February 2016,, 3.40pm - Irish Gold Cup (Leopardstown)
The big race this weekend takes place at Leopardstown on Saturday as they host the Irish Gold Cup (formerly the Irish Hennessy) and it really is one of the best races of the season. Historically this has been won by some legendary names including Florida Pearl, Jodami, Beef Or Salmon and Neptune Collonges and once again we have a very decent field entered for the contest.
- Willie Mullins has trained the winner of this race nine times during his career - Four times with Florida Pearl
- No horse older than nine has won this race since Beef Or Salmon in 2007 who was 11.
Road to Riches The Clear Favourite
We have a red hot favourite for the race this weekend in the form of Road To Riches and he will certainly take all the beating on all known form. The Noel Meade trained chaser was one of the best in training last season with his 3rd place finish in 2015 Gold Cup was top class form by any standard.
That really was a terrific run from Road To Riches and all roads lead back to the Cheltenham Festival for this horse. Given a much lighter campaign this term, Road To riches will be having just his second start of the season after his Oil Chase win at Clonmel back in November and is expected to be far too good.
How he performs on Saturday is likely to decide the Cheltenham target for Road Riches with the Gold Cup or the Ryanair Chase still under consideration, especially with the same owners already having Don Cossack and Don Poli for the Gold Cup. Either way, Road To Riches should be a class above the rest of these on Saturday with Paddy Power offering just 4/5 about him winning the Irish Gold Cup.
Who Are The Threats To The Favourite?
Punters looking to oppose the favourite don't have too many options to consider but one who has come in for money this week is Valsuer Lido who looks the main hope for Willie Mullins this weekend. Another Gigginstown owned horse, Valseur Lido rarely runs a bad race as he showed when 2nd in the John Durkan before Christmas although this will be his first start since he fell in the King George.
Valsuer Lido is unlikely to have enough to beat Road To Riches, but he is often placed in these big races which means he does appeal at an each way price of 8/1 with Paddy Power.
First Lieutenant has been a top horse for many years now and although his top level may not be what it was, he was 2nd in the Lexus over Christmas which was his best run in some time whilst Gilgamboa (9/1) has a similar profile to Valseur Lido and although its hard to see him winning, he does have ability.
Carlingford Lough (20/1) won this race last year but has shown next to nothing since which should rule him out, whilst Sir Des Champs (20/1) is not the same horse he used to be since his return from injury and it is hard to see him in the frame based on his poor Lexus run last time out and Foxrock (8/1) does tend to come up short when it at this level.
Riches On The Road To Glory
The simple fact here is that Road To Riches is the best horse in the race and that shouldn't be ignored despite the fact he is such a short price. His run in the Gold Cup was a brilliant one last year and the fact that he has been campaigned much more lightly this term can only be a good thing and although Valsuer Lido and Gilgamboa do make each way appeal, it is hard to see past the Noel Meade horse this weekend.
