Expect Native River To Pour On The Pressure In Towton Novices Chase Betting
Saturday 6th February 2016, 2.45pm - Towton Novices Chase (Wetherby)
The countdown to the Cheltenham Festival is now well and truly on and the big trial races continue this weekend up and down the country and on both sides of the Irish Sea. One race that could be of particular importance is the Grade 2 Towton Novices Chase which is a 3m contest run at Wetherby and we have some very decent stayers entered up for this one.
- Mr Mulligan won this race back in 1996 before going on to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham the following season
- Six of the last seven winners of this race have been aged 7 - Ely Brown was 9 in 2014.
Very Tight Betting At The Top Of The Market
There are only six runners engaged this season for this race but four of them in particular are very good and as such the head of the market is crowded as a result.
The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Blaklion has been among the best staying Novice Chasers in the UK this season and he will rightly start as favourite at Wetherby. His last two runs at Cheltenham have both been very good including last time out when 2nd in the Dipper and we should see him to better impact back up in trip on Saturday.
Blaklion doesn't win too many races which would be a worry but he does bring with him solid form and that means he is a 6/4 favourite for Paddy Power.
Definitly Red (4/1) ran really well at Warwick last time out when only beaten by Black Hercules which is form that would put him in the frame here. He has improved out of sight this season for Brian Ellison although he might need a bit more again here to win which would be a slight worry.
Colin Tizzard has had a stunning season so far and although Native River might not be one of his top stable stars, punters should be very careful ignoring him when considering their RSA or National Hunt Chase bets in March. Native River was an excellent winner of the Berkshire Novices Chase back in November before he ran with credit when 3rd in the Feltham at Kempton over Christmas.
Native River is an out and out stayer and Wetherby should suit him more than Kempton which means that he does make appeal here at a price of 10/3 with Sky Bet.
Bitofapuzzle also has an engagement elsewhere but if she runs at Wetherby she musn't be ignored for Harry Fry. She will have weight in her favour due to her sex and she was super impressive at Exeter before Christmas when she hosed up at Exeter and that was an eye-catching run.
Bitofapuzzle (9/2) fell last time out when a red hot jolly at Thurles which would be a slight worry as would the form of Harry Fry at the moment but Bitofapuzzle is a classy mare and on her best form, she would be in the mix here, if she runs.
Native River the Bet In Open Race
This race really is a bit of a puzzle with all four of the market leaders potential winners with Blaklion perhaps the most solid of the quartet when it comes to form. Native River is the one we like though with is November win at Newbury still fresh in the mind and he was staying on well in the Feltham and with this race likely to be more of a test, we fancy Native River to pour the heat onto his rivals.
